Approach

updated Feb 2018

Approach

Approach steering WSW and when 2nm from Simrishamn harbour bring a windmill, in the town, over the entrance, bearing 252°. The line leads well S of Nedjan, a 2.7m shoal lying 1.25nm NE of Simrishamn Lighthouse, which is marked on its E side by Nedjan Lightbuoy (E cardinal, pillar) and on its S side by a buoy (S cardinal, spar) and on its W side by a buoy (W cardinal, spar).

The leading line is marked by red triangular beacons on the same posts as the leading lights, this leads between a series of port and starboard hand spar buoys up to the harbour entrance.

At night, from the same position, the approach is made on the alignment 249.5° with the leading lights;

Front Light (red triangle on metal framework tower, elevation 10m) 55°33.5'N 014°21.1'E.

Rear Light (red triangle on metal framework tower, elevation 12m), 105m apart. The alignment leads WSW, passing, (with position from Simrishamn Light, white tower, 15m in height (55°33.5'N 014°21.6'E)).

SSE of Nedjan (1.25nm ENE) a shoal patch marked on by lightbuoys (cardinal).

A wreck with a depth of 17.0m over it lies 1.75nm E of the harbour entrance.

SSE of a wreck with depths of 10.0m over it, 0.7nm NE, then, between the buoys, (lateral), marking the channel off the entrance.

Simrishamn Light may be difficult to identify from seaward due to the bright background lights from the fishing quay.

Once inside the outer harbour, in depths of 4.0 to 5.5m, the inner harbour is entered through a 30m wide gap between the heads of the inner mole, This manoeuvre requires a sharp and difficult turn.

The small craft harbour, whose entrance is marked by buoys, is entered to the NW of the outer harbour.

When past the moleheads alter course N to clear the E pier of the inner harbour.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained during fresh W winds in depths of 15.0m, sand and clay, with good holding ground, in Tobiasviken, N of the harbour but anchoring is prohibited within approx 0.3nm between N and E of the harbour entrance.
