Approach
updated Jan 2025Approach
The port is entered through buoyed channels in the estuary of Chang Jiang. The inner port of Shanghai is entered through Huangpu Jiang.
The channel consists of 2 parts. The Changjiang River estuary channels until recently were 2 water areas, the South Channel at the lower reaches of the Changjiang River and the S lane of the S waterway, together they are called the South Channel. The length is 98km, mud and sand bottom, min width 500m. There are 3 shoal water areas, Tongsha, Jiangya and Yawosha, the depth of the first two is 6.0m and the last is 7.0m. This channel is no longer artificially maintained because of the amount of dredging, it can only take vessels under 10,000t.
The North Channel is 32.4km in length, 250m in bottom width and has a depth of 7.5m, plus height of the tide, so enables 20,000DWT vessels to enter by waiting for the tide. Vessels over 45,000DWT can enter the harbour after being lightened at Luhua Hill.
The Huangpu River channel starts from No 101 Lightbuoy at Wusongkou and continues up to the Maozhu Harbour in Songjiang County. The total length is 84.7km, the breadth of the deep channel is approx 200m. The section between Wusongkou and Zhanghuabang is 4.2km in length and has a depth of over 10.0m, accommodating 30,000t vessels. The section between Zhanghuabang and Longhua is 28km in length and includes Gaoqiao shallow water, which has a min depth of 8.0m, vessels drawing 10.6m can still pass during HW. The section between Longhua and Minhang is also 28km in length. It has a natural depth of approx 7.0m and can accommodate vessels of 5,000t. There is a large volume of traffic with vessels densely moored on it, the Huangpu River is one of the busiest waterways in China (mainland). There are designated turning areas.
Dredging: Local authorities advise that dredging project done would allow vessels up to 50,000DWT to reach as far as Nanjing in Jiangsu province. Shanghai International Ports Group have completed their new Waigaoqiao Deep Water shipping channel which has increased the entrance draught for their Waigaoqiao berths to 12m with an alongside draught of 13.7m.
Jingjiang Reach: The middle part of the Yangtze River, length 347km from Yichang in Hubei to Chenglingji in Hu'an, is to receive maitenance dredging over the next 3-5 years. After the maintenance, the depth of Jingjiang reach is expected to reach 3.5m and above during the dry season, the depth was increased to 3.2m during the drought season. 13 shallow waterways between Changmenxi and Xiongjiazhou will be maintained, and will become channels 3.5m deep and 150m wide with 100m bending radius, navigable for 3,000DWT cargo carriers and 10,000DWT fleet all around the year.
Controlling Depths: The channel from ESE is dredged to 16.5m and Yangshan Gang Main Channel has a least depth of 16.0m, channel to LNG Terminal min 15.0m.
Port limits
The outer limits of the port extend from area of the SE point of Chongming Dao (31°26.6'N 121°53.0'E), E to Sheshan Dao Light (31°25.3'N 122°14.5'E), then SSE to Jigu Jiao Light (31°10.4'N 122°22.9'E), SE to Changjiang Kou Light Float (31°06.1'N 122°28.1'E), SW to Nanzhi Light Vessel (30°59.2'N 122°10.5'E) and then SW to Nanhui Zui (30°52.0'N 121°55.0'E). These limits are not charted and may be subject to change due to land reclamation and movement of light floats and vessels.
The inner port limits cross Chang Jiang from Liuhe Kou (31°31.0'N 121°19.0'E) NNE to Chongming Dao.
Huangpu Jiang limits are from the charted limits extending SSE from Wusong Kou Hetand Light (31°23.8'N 121°31.1'E) and upriver to Minhang Power Plant and Punan Mianqucao (30°59.1'N 121°22.2'E).
Large areas of the N part of Hangzhou Wan, including Jinshan and Yangshan Deep Water Port, are part of Shanghai Port's jurisdiction over the shore line of Chang Jiang to Zhenjiang.
Traffic schemes and VTS
VTS is compulsory and monitors all traffic on the Yangtze River (Changjiang) and up the Huangpu River. The reporting system is mandatory for all passenger vessels and other vessels of 300GT and over. Vessels under 300GT may participate in the Shanghai Reporting System on a voluntary basis. The working languages of the system are Mandarin Chinese and English.
Traffic Separation Schemes are established for the whole route from the approaches to Changjiang Kou, including the Huangpu River where there are main in bound and out bound channels with a separation area between and, outside the main channel, a one way auxiliary channel on either side for smaller vessels. There is no centre line buoyage.
Radar assistance: There are 3 radar stations located at Hengsha Dao, Changxing Dao and Wusong.
Wusong Kou Signal Station: This station stands at the entrance to the Huangpu River on the N bank. Heavy traffic of all descriptions can be expected in the area. When the number of local craft manoeuvring in the channel in Wusong Kou is excessive and makes navigation difficult, a large red flag is hoisted at the Wusong Kou Signal Station. This signal indicates all vessels should navigate with extreme caution.
Yangshan: Participation in the VTS is mandatory for all vessels.
Anchorages
There are no anchorages in the Huangpu River for vessels over 1,000DWT.
The quarantine anchorage outside Wusongkou has a depth of 9.0-16.0m, mud and sand bottom.
Anchoring is prohibited in a number of areas of the Huangpu River because of submarine cables and pipelines. These areas are marked by distinctive sign boards, one on each bank of the river. Anchoring within 10m of the marked areas is prohibited and in the vincinity of various tunnels.
Restrictions
Controlling Depths in the Huangpu River are subject to continual change but the river can be entered by any vessel whose draught permits passage through Nangang Shuidao.
It is possible to enter and sail after sunset. Tankers calling at the Huangpu terminal must not be more than 12 years old or more than 15 years old if calling at the Huangpu River terminals.
Huangpu Bridges: Airdraught restrictions for Yang Pu, 48m; Nan Pu, 44m; Lu Pu, 44m; Xu Pu, 44m and Feng Pu, 22m.

About Shanghai
updated Dec 2025Where it is
The city of Shanghai is located in the middle of China's East coast and is centred on the North section of the Huangpu River which lies between Wusongkou (31°24.0'N 121°32.0'E) to the North, at the junction of the mouth of the Yangtze River (Changjiang) and Minhang Power Station to the South. Shanghai extends approx 120km from North to South and nearly 100km from East to West and has a water area of about 122km².
The port
Shanghai is the principal industrial, financial and commercial centre for the country. In recent years, the City has undergone a period of major regeneration, with some of its older riverside wharves being redeveloped. Several new terminals, catering for much larger vessels in deeper water, have been built away from the City centre; part of Shanghai's long term plans to cope with China (mainland) rapid economic growth.
The port includes five major working zones: The Yangtze River Estuary, the Huangpu River mouth at Wusongkou, Waigqoqiao and the Pudong coastline. The fifth zone of Yangshan Deepwater Port is reached by a road bridge over 30km long and is a newly created port area on reclaimed land to the S of the mainland.
Changxing Island and Hengsha Island, new areas of port construction, lie between the Beigang and Nangang Channels, at the entrance of the Yangtze River.
Traffic
Approx. 860,000,000t of cargo and 51,500,000TEU handled annually.
