About Shakhtersk
updated Mar 2019Where it is
Shakhtersk port lies at the head of Zaliv Gavrilova, on the W coast of Sakhalin Island.
The port
The port, which is closed due to ice in the winter, consists of a roadstead, Reyd Shakhtersk, and a basin protected by breakwaters for small vessels. The principle cargo is coal, the cargo is transferred in the roads to barges using ship's own handling gear.
Latterly, the Port has been using an Offshore Transshipment Facility (OFT) to increase throughput for its coal by East Mining Company. This method of cargo transfer is being used while longterm decisions are made on a new jetty. Using this method, the port is set to achieve a throughput of up to 20 million tonnes per year.
