Approach
updated Aug 2010Approach
The port is approached directly from seaward and entered between the heads of two moles which extend NW of the coast:
SW mole: A six sided concrete tower, white with green bands, green lantern, height 8m.
NW mole: A six sided concrete tower, with red bands, red lantern.
The alignment of the leading lights bearing 156° standing on the Voorhaven, leads through the harbour entrance which is approx 150m in width.
Front light: A grey metal mast, 52°05.8'N 004°15.7'E, white lantern.
Rear light: A grey metal mast, 100m SSE of the front light, white lantern.
It is advisable for vessels to keep this leading line while to seaward of the "SCH" lightbuoy (safe water, 1.5nm NW of harbour entrance vessels should keep clear of the buoy which is on the leading line).
A second pair of leading lights, (green), with an alignment of 131° and leads into Voorhaven.
Traffic schemes and VTS
Vessel Traffic Service scheme is maintained for the control of shipping, with radar surveillance out to a range of 9.5nm from the port.
Traffic signals are exhibited from a mast (52°06.6'N 004°15.7'E) standing on the N side of the entrance to Voorhaven. A red over a white light indicates that entry is prohibited and a white over a red light that departure is prohibited.
A yellow flashing light indicates that one or more large outbound vessels are leaving the port. The light continues to be exhibited until the vessels clear the mole.
A red light displayed from the inner end of the passage leading into No 2 Haven indicates that vessels are prohibited from departing.
Anchorages
Prohibited anchorage: Anchoring is prohibited in an area, approx 1nm in width and extending 2nm to seaward. "SCH" Lightbuoy marks the seaward limit of this area, which includes both the submarine pipeline and the leading line through the harbour entrance.
