Pilot

updated May 2010

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 50GT. Arrangements for pilots are made through Port of Spain, Trinidad, via North Post Coast Radio Station (10°45'N 061°34'W) giving at least 48 hours notice of ETA. The pilot boards 0.3nm SW of Lodge Point (11°10.1'N 060°43.6'W).

Caution: While approaching the port and embarking the pilot it is advised that vessels stay E of the leading line, in order to counteract an expected set W caused by wind and current conditions.

Approach

Directions for entering the port: From a positions approx 4nm SSE of Bacolet Point (11°10'N 060°43'W) the alignment 330.5° leads NW, passing SW of Minster Rock, marked by a lightbuoy (S cardinal), then NE of Bulldog Shoal, over which the sea breaks; the SE side of the shoal is marked by a light beacon (S cardinal), then, SW of Lighthouse Ledge extending 0.25nm SW from Bacolet Point; the SW side of the ledge is marked by No 2 Light Beacon (starboard hand). Then NE of a bank, with depths of less than 5.0m over it, extending 0.8nm ESE from Red Rocks; the SE side of the bank is marked by No 1 Light Beacon (port hand). Then between middle shoal and the NE coast of Rocky Bay, fringed by shoal water. Light beacons (lateral) mark Middle Shoal and the shoal water along the coast.

The track then leads to a position close SW of the breakwater, from the head of which is exhibited a light. From this position the anchorage and berths can be directly accessed.

Anchorages

Anchorage is available near the head of Rocky Bay in depths from 11.0m to 29.0m, over mud and sand; care is necessary to avoid Middle Shoal. Although a safe anchorage, it is never very smooth as the trade wind sends a continuous swell into the bay, rendering boat work and lightering work uncomfortable.

Tugs

If tugs are required they must be arranged well in advance from Port of Spain, Trinidad.
