Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

A buoy (orange and white) moored in the approaches approx 1.5nm SE of the extremity of Stearns Wharf marks the extremity of a sewer outfall.

A heavy bed of kelp lies in the roadstead and the approach is made through a break in this kelp which is usually kept open by passing vessels.

"SB" Lightbuoy (safe water) and No 3 Lightbuoy (port hand) moored approx 0.5nm SSE and 0.15nm S respectively, off the extremity of Stearns Wharf, mark the approach to the entrance.

Caution: At high tide the jetty and sandbar on the S side of the entrance become relatively inconspicuous at night but the masts of the vessels in the harbour are clearly visible over the breakwater. It has been known for strangers making for the entrance and not having identified the navigational lights, to steer for the masts in the harbour and to have grounded on the sandbar, the buoyed channel should be followed at all times.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained anywhere inside the kelp that fronts the harbour, but it is not recommended in winter when the kelp becomes detached and may foul a vessel's hawse, large vessels usually anchor outside this area of kelp where there is better holding ground.

The Harbour Master must be informed of the intention to anchor.

Anchoring is prohibited within 100m E of Stearns Wharf at any time and within 0.5nm E of this wharf between December and March.
