updated Jun 2021

Approach

The harbour is approached between Punta Santo Domingo and Punta Vera. The deep harbour entrance lies between the head of Molo Sur, length 1,000m, and Molo Norte, length 100m, 0.25nm NE.

Muelle Policarpo Toro, a 7m wide jetty extends 90m SSW and W from the head of Mole Norte.

Espigon de Atraque, extending NW from the middle of the E shore, divides the harbour into two parts, Poza Chica to the N and Poza Grande to the S.

El Molito, extending N from the root of Espogon de Atraque, encloses on its E side El Puertecito, a small basin.

Directions for entering the harbour: From a position W of the harbour entrance, the approach on the alignment 092.5° of the leading lights passes between the lights marking the head of Molo Sur and Molo Policarpo Toro.

Front Light (metal pillar on white triangular structure, orange stripe, 13m in height), in position 33°34.8'S 071°37.6'W;

Rear Light (similar structure, 14m in height), 75m from the front light.

To enter Poza Chica, the alignment 092.5° of the leading lights leads from the harbour entrance to Poza Chica.

To enter Poza Grande, leading lights:

Front Light Beacon (elevation 6m) in position 33°35.3'S 071°37.8'W.

Rear Light Beacon (elevation 8m), 95m from the front light.

The alignment 141° of the leading lights leads from the harbour entrance into Poza Grande;

Front Light Beacon (elevation 6m) in position 33°35.5'S 071°37.9'W.

Rear Light (elevation 8m), 125m from the front light.

The alignment 164.5° of the leading lights leads from the Poza Grande entrance towards the berths on Molo Sur.

Port limits

The port limits are on the W and S from the Head (33°34.9'S 071°38.3'W), of Molo Sur, 270° for 0.2nm, then 000° for 0.6nm.

Anchorages

Vessels awaiting entry may anchor in a depth of 28m, sand and mud, 1.3nm W of the head of Molo Sur (33°34.9'S 071°38.3'W) from which is exhibited Molo Sur Light.

Anchorage may also obtained 0.3nm and 0.8nm SW of the light in about 18m and 31m of water respectively.

Restrictions

The port is small, there is limited room for manoeuvring vessels over 130m in length. Chemical vessels may only be entered during daylight hours, therefore they should stand off during the night or time their arrival for the early morning, before the strong S'ly winds blow.

Tugs

Available.

Mooring

There are uncharted mooring buoys in the harbour. No. 01 mooring buoy can accommodate vessels up to LOA 210m, draught 11m.

The swell is often strong enough to cause ships to range heavily alongside.

Vessels are moored bow out unless cargo or draught constraints require otherwise.
