Approach
updated Jun 2017Approach
Directions: Ormos Vathi is entered between Akra Ayios Paraskevi (37°46'N 026°56'E), and Akra Kotzikas approx 1nm NE. The shores of the inlet are fringed by a narrow shallow bank. The only offshore danger is a rocky shoal with a depth over it of 5.0m lying 300m off the NE shore (1nm SE of Akra Kotzikas).
Useful marks: Akra Kotsikas Light (concrete tower, 4m in height) (37°47'N 026°57'E), exhibited 0.35nm E of Akra Kotzikas.
Can Dagi (37°39.6'N 027°08.8'E) which is a good mark for identifying Ormos Vathi from N. When the mountain bears about 126° the low land at the head of the inlet is in line with the saddle between the two peaks.
Anchorages
The inner part of Oros Vathi, S of a line drawn from Akra Taverna to Akra Katsouni (0.5nm E) affords good anchorage. General depths are from 10.0-38m. The holding ground is excellent and, with ordinary precautions, vessels never drag their anchors.
The best anchor berth is off the SW shore in a depth of 24.0m, mud. This berth is sheltered from the swell by Akra Taverna.
A good berth is near the head of the inlet in a depth of approx 13m. Caution is necessary as the depths decrease rather suddenly. Merchant vessels usually anchor off Liminas Samou in depths from 5.0-18.0m, mud. The recommended berth is in a depth of 15.0m, mud and weed, with the head of the mole bearing 328° distant 0.15nm.
