The harbour is approached from the E. When a position is reached about 0.3nm SSE of the head of the E breakwater the track leads NW in the white sector (319.2°-320-8°) of Samcheok Hang Directional Light, into the outer basin of the harbour.
Port limits
The outer limit of the harbour is defined by a line drawn SE from 0.5nm from the vicinity of 27°26.5'N 129°11.6'E, N of the harbour, then S for 4.3nm, and then WSW to the coast.
Anchorages
Outer anchorages: There are three designated anchorage areas outside the harbour as follows (positioned from the head of the E breakwater):
Section I (0.2nm N)
Section II (0.3nm NE)
Quarantine anchorage (0.18nm E)
There are depths from 9.0-19.0m in the anchorages, sand and mud. As the anchorages are exposed it is advisable to weigh anchor and proceed out to sea if bad weather is forecast.

Samcheok is located on the NE coast of the South Korea Peninsula and stands on the N side of the mouth of Osib Chon.
The port
A small commercial and fishing harbour with cement being one of its major exports, also general and oil cargoes handled.
The harbour is enclosed by two breakwaters with a narrow entrance. Inside there is a large outer basin with three wharves for cargo vessels and a N inner basin for fishing vessels. The port also houses a newly developed power station and jetty directly S of the commercial and fishing harbour. The deep water jetty is protected by a breakwater and is used by large bulk carriers delivering coal to the power station.
