Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

A sector light for the approach to the harbour entrance is situated on the N side of Jetee Transversal Nord, 0.5nm SSE of Sidi Bou Zid. The light is exhibited from a white tower, 8m in height, painted with black bands. The white sector, bearing between 097° and 103°, leads towards the entrance of the harbour.

Leading lights which lead into the harbour when in line bearing 150°, are exhibited from Mole Oblique.

Front light: Situated on the N corner of the mole.

Rear light: Situated on a freezer building, 0.08nm SSE.

The entrance to the harbour is 180m in width and has a least depth of 8.0m at the entrance.

Anchorages

Anchorage can be obtained 0.8nm SW of the head of Grande Jetee, the main breakwater, in a depth of approx 24.0m. The anchorage does not provide protection from W'ly winds or swells. Although entirely open to W winds, rade de Safi affords good anchorages during the summer months when the sea is usually fairly smooth.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchoring is prohibited within the white sector of the direction light.

Restrictions

Berthing is during day time only, night departure is by arrangement and dependent on the prevailing weather conditions.

Due to limited turning circle for max length vessels, particularly when other vessels berthed, both anchors should be ready to let go and engine on instant response time when berthing.

Tugs

There are 3 tugs, 2 x 1,800hp and 1 x 1,475hp and also 2 mooring boats available. Tugs are available from the Direction d'Exploitation du Port de SAFI, ODEP-SAFI, Marine Division.

Tugs meet vessel just inside breakwater, 2 tugs for large vessels, using ships lines.
