Approach

updated Aug 2022

Approach

Channel through South Shear: By day: The entrance to South Shear (52°14.0'N 006°15.0'W) is approached from SSE on the line of bearing (284.5°) of the light at the head of the breakwater at Rosslare harbour.

At night: The white sector (283°-286°) of the light leads into the entrance of the channel, where the dangers on either side are covered by coloured sectors.

These bearings lead into the channel, passing (with positions relative to Greenore Point:

SSW of South Long Lightbuoy (S cardinal) (2nm E), then:

NNE of Splaugh Lightbuoy (port hand) (1.25nm E), then S of South Long Lightbuoy (S Cardinal) (2nm E).

After passing South Long Lightbuoy the recommended track leads:

Between Callmines Lightbuoy (port hand) (0.85nm NE) and South Holden's Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (1.25nm NE), then:

SW of West Holden's Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (1.3nm N).

Channel through North Shear: Approaches from seaward: The N end of North Shear (6.5nm NNE of Rosslare Harbour) is approached from seaward either:

From N through the Rusk Channel (52°30.0'N 006°11.0'W), or

From E passing between the N end of Lucifer Bank and the S end of Blackwater Bank (52°22.5'N 006°13.0'W).

Clearing line from E. The alignment (310°) of Blackwater Head (52°26.0'N 006°20.0'W) and the NE slope of Mount Leinster (20nm NW) leads SW of Blackwater Bank, passing:

SSW of South Blackwater Lightbuoy (S Cardinal) (52°23.0'N 006°13.0'W), then NNE of Barham Shoals (4.25nm SE of Blackwater Head).

Directions through North Shear: The line of bearing 195° of the light at the head of Rosslare Breakwater (52°15.4'N 006°20.2'W) leads through North Shear, passing:

WNW of North Long Lightbuoy (N Cardinal) (52°21.4'N 006°16.9'W) which marks the inner side of the N end of Long Bank, then WNW of West Long Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (3nm NNE of Rosslare Breakwater Light).

At night the white sector (188°-208°) of Rosslare Breakwater Light leads through the channel but, until past West Long Lightbuoy, the light should be kept bearing less than 198° in order to avoid crossing the N part of Long Bank.

Directions for entry: Having approached Rosslare Harbour either through South Shear or through North Shear, the head of the breakwater should be rounded at a prudent distance keeping (with positions from the breakwater light):

E or SE of a 4.3m rocky patch (0.45nm NW), then:

NE of No 3 Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (0.25nm W) marking the NE edge of the shoal water to the W of the harbour.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Scheduled traffic has priority. The alongside Berth No 4, at the outer end of the breakwater, must be kept clear for regular arrivals and departure of ferry traffic at the inner Berth No 3.

Anchorages

Rosslare Bay, or South Bay, situated between Greenore Point (52°14.4'N 006°18.8'W) and Rosslare Point (4.75nm NNW), affords good shelter in all W winds but is unsafe in onshore winds, although the sea is somewhat broken by the off-lying banks.

Recommended anchorage may be obtained 0.75nm N of Rosslare Harbour in depth 7.3m, sand over clay, with the breakwater light bearing 180° and the old coastguard tower (1.75nm WNW) bearing 270°.

Other vessels of deeper draughts: In greater depths near Holden's Bed (approx 1nm further E).

Prohibited anchorage: Vessels are not permitted to anchor within 0.5nm of the breakwater light as it interferes with ferry traffic going alongside.

Restrictions

Regular scheduled traffic has priority.

Tugs

Not available.
