Approach

Approach

Approach and entry: Port de Roscoff-Bloscon is approached from NE of Ile de Batz through a controlled approach channel and entered between Mole Pierre Lemaire and a lightbuoy moored 0.2nm S. The port can also be approached from Baie de Morlaix passing between Plateau des Duons (48°44'N 003°55'W) and Bazenn ar Menk.

From the vicinity of the pilot boarding place the line of bearing 215° of Bloscon Light (white turret green top, 5m in height) (48°43'N 003°58'W) or by night in its white sector (200°-210°) leads in the approach passing (with positions given from Bloscon Light):

Between Basse de Bloscon (0.47nm NNE) marked on its N side by a lightbuoy (N cardinal), distant approx 0.2nm, and Bazenn ar Menk (0.7nm E) on which stands a lighted beacon tower.

The track then continues generally SSW passing E of the breakwater, rounding the latter to enter harbour passing between the breakwater head and Ar Pouven Lightbuoy (N cardinal) (0.2nm S).

Caution: A 4.4m rocky patch lies 0.2nm NNE of the breakwater head near the W limit of the white sector of Bloscon Light and a 5.6m rocky patch lies 0.125nm ENE of the breakwater head with a 6m rocky patch, the controlling depth for the port, midway between.

There are two channels of approach to the port of Roscoff, Passe de Benven, which can be used by day or night, leads direct from Mouillage de Tisaoson and is indicated by leading lights, and Passe du Rannic which is approached from a position close N of Basse de Bloscon Lightbuoy (48°43.8'N 003°57.5'W).

Passe de Benven: Leading Lights:

Front mark. Nouveau Mole Light (white column green top, 7m in height) (48°43.6'N 003°58.6'W).

Rear mark. Roscoff Light (0.25nm SSW of the front mark).

The alignment (209°) of these lights leads in the channel from Mouillage de Tisason passing (with positions given from the front mark):

Close WNW of Roc'h C'hlaz (0.25nm NNE); then

ESE of Ar Benven Braz (0.25nm N) marked by a beacon (concrete cross); then close WNW of Toull Ranig (0.15nm NNE) to the harbour entrance.

Passe du Rannic: Leading marks:

Front mark. Rannic Beacon Tower (N cardinal) (48°43.7'N 003°58.2'W).

Rear mark. Roscoff Belfry (0.55nm WSW of the front mark).

From a position close NNW of Basse de Bloscon Lightbuoy (N cardinal) the alignment (261°) of this marks leads in the approach passing (with positions given from the front mark):

SSE of Men Guen Bras Lighted Beacon Tower (N cardinal, 20m in height) (0.2nm ENE).

The track then continues generally WSW passing:

NNW of Rannic Beacon Tower, distant approx 30m.

The track then leads SW, or at night in the white sector (068°-073°) of Men Guen Bras Light, astern, through Passe du Rannic.

The track then leads generally SSW to the harbour entrance.

Anchorages

Waiting anchorages: Anchorage for vessels waiting to enter Port de Roscoff-Bloscon, can be obtained NE of the entrance to the port in an area sheltered from SE and NW winds bounded on the W by Basse de Bloscon (48°44'N 003°58'W) and on the E by Plateau des Duons and Bazenn ar Menk.

One of the best anchorages, principally used by mariners proceeding to Roscoff, is NE of Men Guen Bras Light Beacon Tower (48°44'N 003°58'W), in depths of approx 14.0m, sand and shells, good holding ground.

Anchorage is controlled in the port between the breakwater and the lightbuoy 0.2nm S.

W part of the channel: With prevailing E winds, vessels may anchor in the W section of the channel, up to the S of Malvoch Beacon Tower (48°44.3'N 004°00.6'W).

Small vessels can anchor in Moillage de Tisaosan, W of Ar Chaden Lighted Beacon Tower (48°44'N 003°58'W) in depths of 3.0-5.0m, sand and gravel, but the holding ground is bad and the swinging room restricted.

Before anchoring, vessels must contact the Harbour Master.

Prohibited anchorage: Submarine power cables cross the channel between Penn ar Cleguer, the SE point of Ile de Batz and Roscoff. Anchoring and fishing are prohibited in an area, on either side of the cables.

Restrictions

Vessels must request permission to enter harbour from the harbour master before proceeding in.
