Approach

The harbour entrance faces N and can become dangerous in strong NE winds. There are depths from 5.0-8.0m between the short rubble breakwater making the W side of the entrance and the head of Molo Foraneo.

Anchorages

The best anchorage is obtained 0.1nm NE of Molo Foraneo Light, in depths of 20.0-30m, mud and sand, good holding ground.

Caution: Two submarine outfall pipelines extend seaward in the vicinity. The first extends 0.2nm SE from near the root of the mole, the second extends 0.8nm ESE from a point on the shore 0.2nm NNW of the mole head light.

Rio Marina is situated on the E coast of Elba Island.

The port

The port consists of an outer breakwater with berths on inside wall. Rio Marina exports locally mined iron ore but is primarily a local Ro-Ro ferry port. The port is a shallow port with 2 berths, one of which has depth of up to 6.5m alongside. The port does however have an anchorage for larger vessels, in over 30m of water.
