Approach
updated Aug 2010Approach
When approaching the port from NE in clear wather Minti di Carpegna (20nm SW) is first raised followed by Monte San Marino (10nm SW). These, in line, lead to the approaches of the port.
On nearer approach the buildings of the city are visible, and the conspicuous skyscraper building bearing 190.5° and in line with Rimini Light leads to the harbour entrance.
About 1nm within the head of Molo de Levante the harbour is spanned by a railway bridge, and then successively by Ponte della Pestistenza and Ponte Tiberio.
Caution: Mariners approaching Rimini are advised that a number of dangerous wrecks lie within a radius of 6.5nm of the harbour entrance.
Anchorages
A designated anchorage of 0.3nm radius, for ships carrying non-dangerous cargoes has been established about 2.8nm of Rimini Main Light, mud, good holding ground.
Before anchoring, vessels must contact the local maritime authority on VHF Ch 16 to obtain the necessary authorisation.
Restrictions
Fiume Marecchia is sometimes prone to sudden flooding, when level can rise to 1m above the level of the quays, causing silting and violent currents. Six hours warning of these floods is always given.
Strong winds for seaward raise the water level in the harbour.
