The port is approached directly from the Danube River. The limit depth to proceed to Reni Port down the Sulina channel is 7.0m.
Port limits
Territory of the Reni Sea Commercial Port includes the length of the fenced coastal strip on the left bank of the Danube between the points 66.7 and 69.3 miles. The port water area is a part of the Danube at the left bank between the points 62.5 and 71 miles, which is delineated by a conventional state boundary.
Traffic schemes and VTS
When approaching the port's waters, all seagoing and river vessels shall contact the Vessel Traffic Control on VHF to receive permission to enter the port or transit the ports waters. Co-ordination between all ships and the VTCS is compulsory for all ships longer than 20m as well as for vessels engaged in towage and pushing.
Radar traffic control station (VTCS) is located in the ISPS building. Contact by phone: 76-48, VHF Ch 73, call sign "Reni - Port Control", watch on Ch 16. The VTCS issues permits to vessels and boats to enter the Port waters, movements in the Port water area, change berths or anchorages, enter or leave the backwater and monitor movement of vessels within the Port water area.
The Master of a vessel is obliged, despite the obtained registration of the departure with the ISPS, to obtain the VTCS permit for leaving the Port after notification on the departure number.
When approaching the 65.5 mile from downstream and the 67.5 mile from upstream (the VTCS visibility zone), Masters of ships are obliged to establish a contact with the VTCS.
Anchorages
Depths in the roads vary from 2.0-25.0m (from the bank towards the mid river). The bottom in the port water area is limy and, sometimes sandy.
Restrictions
Entry and departure of ships to and from the port is permitted throughout 24 hours, with certain exceptions:
Entry and exit of seagoing ships and river sea ships to and from the backwaters at wind 28.3kts or over is prohibited.
Depending on the ship's size and meteorological and other conditions, the ISPS will decide on the possible entry/exit of a ship into the backwaters at night on a case by case basis.
When navigating in the Port water area all ships, except hydrofoils, should proceed at a speed of 8km/hr maximum when moving upstream and 12km/hr when moving downstream, to avoid riverbank erosion.
Overtaking within the Port water area is prohibited, except for hydrofoils.
Turnaround areas for sea going ships are allocated at 70.6 and 64 miles areas, while the ships proceeding to berths 15-21 may turn around by dropping anchor in 67.2 mile area.
Tugs
There are 6 pusher tugs available. 1 x 2,000hp, 1 x 820hp, 1 x 670hp pusher tug, 2 x 600hp and 1 x 45hp pusher tug all available.
Vessels are advised to use two tugs when mooring in backwaters.
Vessels in ballast are required to use a tug to turn.
Turnaround of sea going vessels to proceed backwards is accomplished in the area of 70.6 mile. Turnaround with the aid of port tugs is accomplished near berths with the permission of the VTCS.
Turnaround of sea going vessels longer than 100m during S winds must be made with the aid of port tugs. All other ships are advised to turn around with the aid of a tug to prevent them being caught beam on to the stream for longer than necessary.
Mooring
Mooring a seagoing vessel at a berth between two moored ships is prohibited if the two such ships have already been moored sidewise to other ships (double banked).
