Approach
updated Dec 2024Approach
Approach and entry: The port is approached from seaward either through Canal de Olinda which passes N of the detached breakwater or through Canal do Sul which passes S of it.
A vessel approaching Porto de Recife from the N should give Ponta de Olinda a berth of at least 3nm in order to clear Baixos de Olinda, which are steep-to in places. A vessel rounding the point at night should keep in depths of more than 20.0m.
A vessel approaching from the S should make for Cabo de Santo Agostinho and then steer to keep approx 3nm offshore.
The harbour entrance has a navigable width of 0.1nm with a depth of 9.7m in the Northern Channel with a max draught of 9.4m HW. On its W side Mohle de Olinda, 0.22nm in length, extends NW to the shore, concrete blocks, with depths of more than 1.0m over them, extend nearly 0.1nm ESE from its head. On its E side the barrier reef and the breakwater which extends it, stretch 2nm SSW enclosing the harbour, a masonary wall has been built on top of the barrier reef in order to provide greater shelter and better berthing accommodation.
Anchorages
Fundeadouro do Lamarao, the outer anchorage off the port is situated 1.5nm SSE of the harbour entrance in depths of approx 12m, sand and shells with patches of coral. This anchorage is not recommended during Jun, Jul and Aug when there are strong S winds.
There is anchorage 1nm SSE of the harbour entrance in depths of 11.0m. Recife Light should be kept on a bearing of less than 320° as the bottom is rocky SW of that bearing and care must also be taken to avoid the 5.6m shoal 1.25nm S of the harbour entrance.
Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited in the cable areas leading into Istmo de Olinda and the coast behind Banco dos Afogados.
Restrictions
Permission may be granted for vessels up to 9.4m draught to sail at HW at night, except tankers where all movements are restricted to daylight hours only.

See Country Section for additional information.
Customs and immigration

Cigarettes in cartons, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, narcotics, souvenirs, explosives, firearms, etc should be collected prior to arrival in port and listed with the items in the Crew's Personal Effects List and placed in the custody of the Master.
Immigration: All a vessel's passengers and/or crew members may only enter the national territory after their documents have been inspected by the Federal Police Department, the Revenue Authorities and the Port Health Authorities.
Vessels owners are responsible for the disembarkation and the embarkation of transit passengers as well as crew members who fail to join a vessel before it sails. Such responsibility includes the maintenance and other expenses until repatriation. In the event of non existence of a compulsory deposit as guarantee to cover such expenses, owners will sign, at the Federal Police Department, a form of responsibility inherent to such obligations as therein expressed.
