The port is approached from the N via an entrance channel 150m in width with a dredged depth of 11.0m. The visibility is often affected by dust in the atmosphere.
Outer approach channel (28°27'N 048°48'E): Pipelines and power cables have been laid across the approach channel. Anchoring and fishing are prohibited within the limits covering the pipeline and power cable area between Khafji Oilfield and the coast WSW.
Pipelines are also laid between Khafji Oilfield and Hout Oilfield 16nm NNE.
Inner approach channel: The dredged inner approach channel to Port Ra's al Mish'ab, is marked in accordance with the IALA System, by buoys and leading beacons as follows:
No 1 Buoy (safe water), moored 4.25nm ESE of Ras al Mishab, marks the lead in to the dredged channel, entered approx 1nm further SW; the channel is then marked on its NW side by odd numbered Buoys No 3 to 21 (green conical), and on its SE side by even numbered Buoys No 2 to 20, each pair moored at intervals of approx 0.3nm. A bell is sounded from Buoys No 12 and 13 marking the turn in the channel.
Outer leading beacons (metal towers; rectangular daymarks, black with a white stripe) in line bearing 217.25°, lead through the outer leg of the channel; the front beacon (28°07'N 048°40'E) stands 0.5nm SW of the turn in the channel and the rear beacon, 0.5nm further SW.
Inner leading beacons (similar to outer beacons) stand on the main wharf, approx 0.25nm; in line bearing 251.25°, they lead through the inner leg of the dredged channel directly to the wharf.
