Approach
updated Oct 2019Approach
The harbour is approached through Ramsey Bay and entered between piers which extend E from the shore.
From S the approach through Ramsey Bay to the harbour entrance leads NW from the vicinity of Maughold Head (54°18.0'N 004°18.0'W), passing (positions from the harbour entrance):
NE of Cor Stack and Stack Mooar (2 and 2.5nm SE), two detached rocks, which lie close offshore. Then NE of The Carrick (0.9nm SE), a drying rock marked by a beacon (port hand). Then NE of the dolphin (0.4nm ESE) off the seaward end of Queen's Pier.
From N the bay is clear except for charted dangers lying close to the coast. Two obstructions with a least depth 4.8 and 6.9m over them lie 0.4nm NE and 0.9nm ENE, respectively, of the harbour entrance; a small patch of foul ground lies close NNE of the entrance.
The harbour channel is entered from the E between N and S Piers. A channel marker is exhibited from the knuckle at the W end of S Pier.
The width between the pierheads is 45m and in the entrance channel between the piers there are depths of 6.0m at MHWS; shallower depths exist alongside the inner sections of each pier.
Within the E part of the harbour the channel leads S of a lightbeacon (Dolphin, metal post) which marks the toe of Mooragh Bank lying inside the entrance.
Caution: It is unsafe to attempt to enter the harbour in strong E winds without obtaining advice from the harbour master.
Care is necessary when proceeding into the harbour after heavy rains due to the strong influx of water from the river.
Port limits
The port limits are defined by a line joining Shellag Point (3.25nm N of harbour entrance) and Cor Stack (2.75nm SE of harbour entrance).
Anchorages
Ramsey Bay offers an anchorage, sheltered from W winds, which lies at least 0.4nm E of S Breakwater Light in depths of 5.5m, sand, clear of a foul area 0.4nm ENE of the S Breakwater Light; the holding ground is good but E winds send in a heavy sea. During prolonged E gales a small sandbank sometimes builds up 0.1nm E of the harbour entrance.
Tugs
Available by Laxey Towing Company based in Douglas. Prior notice is required.
Mooring
As directed by harbour master.
The small tidal harbour dries out; vessels should be prepared to take the ground.
