Approach

updated Aug 2020

Approach

The port is approached directly from seaward and entered through a channel dredged to a depth of 12.2m, width 120m, on a leading line, which leads between the breakwaters into the harbour.

Caution: The channel is subject to heavy silting and latest information regarding the depth should be sought from the port authority.

The port has 2 protecting breakwaters, the northern, length 560m and the southern, length 1,330m. The entrance between the breakwaters is 210m wide.

Port limits

The port limits are defined as extending to the N with the town of Quequen and to the S with Necochea City.

Quequen/Necochea have open roadstead as follows:

North: by an imaginary line running parallel to coast. Distance 5nm.

South: by parallel 38°46'W,

West: by meridian 058°51'W,

East: by meridian 058°21'W.

Anchorages

The port has an open roadstead and quarantine anchorage approx 9nm from the berths with depths of approx 15.0m. Holding ground is not good.

Masters are advised to anchor at least 5nm off the port and warned that weather conditions can on occasions change rapidly.

Whilst at anchor a good weather watch should be maintained and vessels should be prepared to weigh anchor and put to sea if conditions start to deteriorate.

Restrictions

Due to extensive silting, local agents should be contacted to obtain the current applicable draught. Vessels with an LOA greater than 210m should liaise with the Port Authority and only berth during daylight hours.

Prohibited areas: An area into which entry is prohibited due to the existance of oceanographic instruments extends 0.3nm S from the head of Escollera Sur and then W and NW to the shore (0.6nm WNW).

Tugs

There are 2 towage companies both operating 2 tugs, with an approx capacity of 3,500hp.

Mooring

Vessels are required to berth bow out, however if conditions do not permit the vessel to be swung or if special conditions regarding cargo apply, vessels may be able to berth bow in.
