Approach
updated Sep 2023Approach
The port can be entered via 3 separate channels: Canal Laitec, (43°15'S 073°39'W), the least dangerous.
Canal Yelcho, 43°13'S 073°36'W, suitable for good weather conditions in daylight only.
Canal Chiguao, 43°11'S 073°30'W, the most dangerous channel.
The Canal Coldita, 43°14'S 073°43'W, is narrow and encumbered with rocks and therefore only suitable for boats.
Canal Laitec: There is a depth of 11.0m on the recommended track, in position 43°12.3'S 073°39.6'W, in the N part of Canal Laitec.
The directions are as follows: From the vicinity of 43°19'S 073°39'W, the recommended track leads N through Canal Laitec, keeping towards the W side, noting that a bank with depths of 7.0m extends up to 0.5nm offshore, so as to clear the dangers on the E side, passing (with reference to Punta Laitec, 43°16'S 073°35'W):
W of an 11.3m patch (2nm SSW), then: W of Bajo Anselmo a 4m patch, marked by a lightbuoy, (1.5nm WSW), thence: W of Roca Aguja (3.5nm NNW) with dangers extending 0.75nm S, then: W of a 8.5m patch (4.5nm NNW).
From the N end of Canal Laitec the track leads NE to Puerto Quellon, passing S of Bajo Blanco, 43°10'S 073°40'W.
Anchorages
Anchorage is recommended approx 0.2nm N of Bajo Valdivia, 43°08'S 073°37'W, least depth 8.0m sand, in depths of approx 22m mud, or farther in 0.15nm S of the ramp light, in depths of 12.0-15.0m.
Quellon also offers good anchorage in moderate depths of 12m-21m. Quellon Bay can then offer anchorage in depths from 24m-29m near the W coast.
Anchorage locations are as follows:
1. 43° 07â 30ââ S., 073° 37'15'' W.
