Approach

updated Jul 2017

Approach

From a position 4.5nm SSW of Avsigsut, steer 007° for Udkiggen on that bearing, which leads 2.75nm E of East Parry Skaer. On closer approach, a cliff at the foot of Skarvefjeld, seen midway between two summits, leads E, and the left tangent of a slope situated a short distance E of Kangarssuk, leads W, respectively, of East Parry Skaer.

Udkiggen and Kodo Beacon towers can be seen from 6.0nm in normal visibility. A radio mast 1.0nm ENE of Udkiggen Beacon tower is also a good mark.

The harbour entrance can be approached from close W of Kodo, which is steep-to. In low visibility, an approach from S or W can be made by keeping in depths over 183m which are found in the deep channels between the N side of Disko Banke and Disko Island, and between the E side of Disko Banke and the islands in the entrance to Disko Bugt. Note, however, that many of the dangers in the approach lie close to the 183m depth contour line, in particular East Parry Skaer.

At night, the white sector of Udkiggen Light, bearing between 357° and 034°, leads between Avsigsut and East Parry Skaer. The white sector of Udkiggen Light bearing between 052° and 069° leads W of West Parry Skaer, but the drying rock approx 2.0nm W of this danger lies in this white sector. Another white sector of Udkinggen Light, bearing between 079° and 095°, leads in from W clear of all dangers.

Entry into the outer harbour: The outer harbour is entered between Havnepynten (69°15.0'N 053°35.0'W) and the S extremity of Nugssuaq, 0.5nm NNE.

Lindbergs Skaer, a group of three rocks, awash, and Hvidfiske Oer, two islets, lie on the N side of the entrance between the fairway and Nugssuaq.

Torskebugt and Lyngmarks Bugt, close E, indent the head of the outer harbour, 0.7nm within the entrance.

Directions

Leading Lights: (shown Aug 1-Jan 1) are established on the E side of the head of the outer harbour and in line (061°) lead through the outer harbour between Lindbergs Skaer and rocks, awash, 0.125nm E of Mallemuknaes:

Front light (red beacon, topmark white triangle, point up, 69°5.3'N 053°33.1'W)

Rear light (red mast, topmark white triangle, point down, 46m ENE)

Entry in the inner harbour:

The inner harbour is entered between Mallemuknaes and a point 0.2nm NE. There are mooring rings on both sides of the entrance and around Eulners Bugt, the SW of two arms which form the inner harbour.

Leading lights (shown Aug 1-Jan 1) are established on the S side of the inner harbour and in line with (146°) lead into the inner harbour, clear of shoal water off Mallemuknaes.

Front light: (white mast, topmark red and white triangle, point up, 6.0m in height, 69°14.9'N 053°33.0'W). Rear light: (white mast, topmark red and white triangle, point down, 10m in height, 137m SSE).

Anchorages

Contact Port Officials for permission to anchor. Anchorage in the middle of the outer harbour lies in depth of 40m, good holding ground, mud bottom, but exposed to the W and SW. Anchorage is also available off Lyngmarks Bugt (used by vessel working small quantity of cargo) Tankers stern-moor adjacent to oil storage tanks on the N side of the inner harbour, bows WSW, with two anchors down stern moored to mooring rings in the vicinity of the anchorage lights established on the NE side of the entrance, in line (057°) they indicate the line of the berth, which is sheltered from all winds.

Anchorage Lights: Front light: (white mast, topmark red and white triangle, point up 7m in height, 69°15.12'N 053°32.9'W). Rear light: (white mast, topmark red and white triangle, point down, 7.0m in height, 61m ENE).

Vessels enter the inner harbour on the line (146°) of the leading lights and let go both anchors, one each side of the line of the anchorage lights (057°). Anchors should be marked by buoys and vessels should moor as far E as possible to be clear of the passage into the inner harbour and clear of the Harbour Leading Line (146°).
