Approach

updated Aug 2010

Approach

From NW, large vessels are advised to approach Porto Vesme by passing between Isolotto dei Meli and Secca Martin, in depths of approx 30m. Smaller vessels may pass between Isola Piana and Secca Grande, in depths of approx 15m, but currents setting NNE towards Secca Grande are sometimes experienced.

The approach from S, has a depth of approx 5m.

Porto Vesme is approached by a channel, dredged to 14.0m, entered 0.5nm SSE of Scoglio La Ghinghetta; it is marked on the N side by No 2 Lightbuoy, and No 4 and No 6 Light Beacons and on the S side by No 1 Lightbuoy (black; light flashing green) and No 3 and No 5 Light Beacons. The light beacons are white columns, those on the N side of the channel have red bands, those on the S side have black bands; all the light beacons carry radar reflectors.

The channel is 200m wide; the course between the outer pair of lightbuoys and light beacons is approx 103°, then approx 055° between the inner pair of light beacons and through the harbour entrance. The channel may not be practicable during strong winds from NW.

Caution: The harbour and entrance channel are subject to silting.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained in depths of approx 15.0m, sand and weed, 0.9nm S of Scoglio La Ghinghetta, but it is exposed to NW winds.

A submarine power cable projects SW from the shore 0.7nm S of Porto Vesme. This cable extends across the Canale di San Pietro to Carloforte on Isola di San Pietro.

Restrictions

Entry is prohibited into an area of 0.3nm radius, centred on position 39°11.10'N 008°22.33'E, when lighterage operations are being carried out.
