Approach
updated Dec 2015Approach
The port is approached through Porto Buso (45°43.0'N 013°15.0'E), the channel between Isola Sant' di Andrea and Isola di Porto Buso, from where a dredged channel leads N across Laguna di Marano to the mouth of Fiume Corno.
Porto Buso: From a position approx 1.75nm S of the E end of Isola Sant' Andrea a channel, dredged to a least depth of 7.0m, but subject to silting, over a width of approx 100m, leads across the bar to the entrance on an axis of 352° passing: Between 3 pairs of buoys (port and starboard hand), small and difficult to distinguish, then: W of the head of the E mole which extends S from the W end of Isola di Porto Buso and on which stands a light (green pedestal, 2m in height), then: E of the head of the W mole which extends S from the E end of Isola di Sant' Andrea and on which stands a light (red hut, 2m in height), then: W of a light beacon (starboard hand, 6m in height) (close N of root of E mole), then: W of a light (green pedestal on dolphin, 5m in height) (0.2nm NE of the E end of Isola di Sant' Andrea). The white sector (346° to 351°) of this light covers the approach between the starboard side of the dredged channel and the head of the E mole.
Laguna di Marano: In the vicinity of the light dolphin described above, the channel alters direction to NW to round the NE end of Isola di Sant'Andrea where the starboard side of the channel is marked by dolphins which should be passed at a distance of 20m. Then the channel leads N across Laguna di Marano for more than 1.75nm to the junction of Fiume Corno and Fiume Aussa. This section of the channel which is dredged to 6.5m, with an average width of 60m, is subject to silting, and is marked by dolphins (painted in bands, black and white to starboard, red and white to port).
Fiume Corno: From the junction of Fiume Corno and Fiume Aussa, Porto Nogaro is reached by proceeding approx a further 4nm up Fiume Corno, in which there are depths in mid-course of approx 5.0m, and which is periodically dredged. The river, with an average width of approx 40m follows a tortuous course between low lying banks.
Power cables with a vertical clearance of approx 30m span the river.
Anchorages
Outer anchorage: Open anchorage can be obtained 1.5nm or more, as appropriate to draught, off the moleheads at Porto Buso, clear of the wreck approx 2.75nm SSE of the molehead. Recommended berths are: In about 8.0m depth with the light structure at the root of the E mole bearing 331°, distant approx 2.5nm.
In 8.0-11.0m with a house on Isola Morgo (3nm ESE of Porto Buso entrance) in line with Aquileia Belfry (6nm NE of Porto Buso entrance) bearing approx 033°. The anchorage affords shelter from offshore winds but should be vacated immediately upon the onset of winds from the S quadrant.
Caution: A submarine pipeline, extends 4nm S from the coast W of the approach channel at Porto Buso.
Restrictions
Entry in daylight hours. The harbour authority must be advised of intended movements so that traffic can be coordinated to avoid 2 vessels meeting in a narrow part of the channel.
