Pilotage is compulsory for all foreign vessels and for US vessels with a draught of 2.1m or more under register in the foreign trade and is available throughout 24 hours. Pilotage is optional for US coastwise vessels which have onboard a pilot licensed by the Federal Government. The Port Everglades Pilots maintain four 12.5m pilot boats each having a grey hull and white superstructure with the word "PILOT".

Pilots board ground is approx 2nm seaward of Port Everglades Seabuoy, day or night. All large, deep draught and passenger vessels should not approach closer than 2nm of the Seabuoy until the pilot has boarded unless specifically instructed by the pilots or Harbour Master. Other vessels may be directed by Pilots to proceed closer to the Seabuoy for boarding. Vessels should maintain a max speed of 7kts and provide a pilot ladder 1.0m above the water on the lee side. The pilot station and boats monitor and use as working frequencies VHF Ch 14, 16, 18A, 19 and 77.

Pilots may be requested by direct contact with the Pilot Station on VHF Ch 14 or 16. Requests for pilot or tug assistance may also be made to the Harbour Master on VHF Ch 14 or on Tel. +1 954 468 0212. Additionally, requests for pilots may be made through the ship's agent.

Pilot note: Pilot Office telephones are only manned during office hours.

Pilotage is not compulsory up to outer anchorages but is strongly recommended if suitable chart is unavailable or where Masters are not familiar with the anchorages.

Tides

Mean tidal range at the harbour entrance is 0.7m with a spring tide of 0.9m. Tide range in the slips is from 0.6-0.9m or less.

Tidal streams in the entrance channel create eddies in the turning basin hampering manoeuvrability. Prevailing SE and E winds with a rising tide create further hazardous conditions. The port authority advises caution in these circumstances.

The entrance channel is generally well protected, being narrow and flanked by breakwaters; however storm tides exceeding 3.5m have been recorded. Dock density: 1025.

Approach

updated Aug 2022

Approach

The Port Everglades sea buoy (buoy PE) is located in position 26° 05.514'N 80° 04.766'W.

The entrance to Port Everglades is a straight channel running in a due W'ly direction for a distance of 1.7nm from the 15.0m depth contour to the main turning basin. The channel has a width of 152m and a depth of 13.7m at its seaward end, reducing to width 137m and depth12.8m from the jetty entrance to the main turning basin. The Intracoastal Waterway leading S from the main turning basin to the Southport turning basin has a width of 152m and is dredged to a depth of 12.8m.

Turning Basins: The main turning basin is 365m in an E and W direction and 746m N and S with a depth of 12.8m.

There is a N extension to the turning basin which is 188m wide E to W on the N limits, 274m wide E to W on the S limits and 350m N to S with a depth of 9.5m.

The S extension of the main turning basin is 396m wide E to W by 396m N to S, with a depth of 9.5m.

The Southport turning basin is 274m E to W by 243m N to S with a depth of 13.4m.

Caution: The chart and port authority should be consulted for the latest controlling depths.

There are submerged breakwaters both N and S of the entrance channel.

Anchorages

The authorised anchorage area is situated 2.25nm NNE of the outer Port Everglades Seabuoy (26° 05.514'N 80° 04.766'W). It is situated clear of the spoil grounds in that vicinity. Medium and deep draught vessels are required to await the pilot before anchoring. All vessels using the anchorage must report their positions and times of anchoring to the Port Everglades Harbour Master on VHF 14. Vessels are not permitted to anchor for more than 72 hours without the Harbour Master's prior consent.

The holding ground in the anchorage comprises sand, mud and coral rubble mixture and is inadequate in adverse weather.

Anchorage is prohibited in a Naval restricted area located immediately offshore to the S of the entrance channel.

In sustained winds of 25 to 30kts from NNE to SSE or on the approach of thunderstorms, pilots recommend that vessels maintain engines on standby and be prepared to leave the anchorage. The pilots further recommend that vessels leave the anchorage if NNE to SSE wind speeds are sustained in excess of 30kts. Under these conditions a proper anchor watch is essential and a continuous listening watch should be maintained on VHF Ch 16 and 14.

Restrictions

There are three fixed security zones within the port. The first comprises all the waters W of a line between the E corner of Berth 1B to the light close N of Berth 23. The second comprises all of the waters S of a line between the same light close N of Berth 23 due E across the Intracoastal Waterway to a line from the SE corner of Pier 29 due E across the Intracoastal Waterway. Vessels are not permitted to enter these zones unless authorised by the Harbour Master or his designated representative.

Additionally, a 91m moving security zone is declared around any passenger vessel, vessels carrying specified hazardous cargo or LNG tankers entering or leaving Port Everglades.

An additional security zone has been established in the Intracoastal Waterway S of Burt and Jack's (restaurant) and N of the FP discharge canal whenever cruise ships are berthed along the Waterway. (The N boundary of this line on the ICW is the parallel of 26°05.4'N and the S boundary is the parallel of 26°04.7'N). Vessels may transit the Intracoastal Waterway when cruise ships are berthed by staying E of the picket boats that will mark a transit lane along the waterway. Periodically, vessels may be asked to temporally hold their position while large commercial traffic operates in this area. Vessels near this security zone must follow the order of the law enforcement vessels on the scene. The effect of these regulations will be felt most heavily from Thursday through to Monday, from 0530 and 1900hrs. When cruise ships are not berthed on the Intracoastal Waterway, the zone will remain in place, but navigation will be unrestricted.

The US Coast Guard will make broadcast on VHF Ch 22 when the zone is being enforced in addition to signs being posted at each end of the zone.

Manatees: During the period 15th November to 31st March there are regulated speed zones in place within the port, indicated by reflective signs, for the protection of manatees. Vessels must reduce their speed to slow or idle within these designated areas. The restricted zones include the entire main turning basin W of a line between lights 11 and 12 and S along the Intracoastal Waterway into and including the Dania Cut-Off Canal.

All vessels of LOA 61m or more should manoeuvre during daylight only and within one hour of slack water.

PORT DANIA WEST BASIN:

The channel area S of the Port Dania West Basin must be sufficiently clear to allow safe manoeuvring.

All tugs employed must be approved by the pilots.

A vessel with a draught of 3.0m up to maximum 3.2m should transit within one hour of high water.

All vessels of 55m LOA or more should manoeuvre during daylight only and within one hour of slack water.

Vessels protruding into the channel at the main ramp must move off of the berth or be shifted to allow safe passage of other vessels.

Tugs

Tugs available.

Arrangements for tugs should be made through the Harbour Master's office. Contact VHF Ch 16, 13, 14, 18A and 77.
