Approach

updated Apr 2023

Approach

All the above routes, except for a portion of Inner Route III, are navigable by night when conditions are favourable and with local knowledge. The whole area of the delta of Sungai Kapuas is subject to heavy showers, squalls, and thick mist in the mornings. The visibility is therefore often reduced, and navigation may be impeded for some hours.

Anchorages

Ocean going vessels unable to enter the river can load cargo in the anchorage, S of the entrance lightbuoy, known locally as Muara Junkat, in depths of 10.0m.

Outer anchorage: Anchorage may be obtained in depths of not less than 20.0m, in which depth the ground swell is less than closer in. During the SW monsoon, from May to September, vessels should anchor still further out, but at this period it is often impossible for boats to enter the river.

Prohibited anchorages: Vessels are cautioned against anchoring off the entrance in a triangular area enclosed by lines joining the following positions:

Anchorage, at Pontianak is abreast the town in depths of 16.0m to 18.0m. There is room for vessels to swing in the anchorage, but they should keep well clear of the Government Pier.

The W limit of the anchorage is the meridian of 109°18.93'E. The E limit is the W limit of the prohibited anchorage described below.

Due to submarine cables, vessels are cautioned against anchoring in 2 areas situated, respectively, close NW and SE of the entrance to Sungai Landak, nearly opposite Pontianak.

The limits of each area are marked by a red triangular board, from which a light is exhibited.

Therefore, actions required in paragraphs C and D of this Port Security Advisory are no longer required for vessels that arrive in the United States after visiting ports in the Republic of Indonesia.
