Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

The port is approached along the recommended track on the alignment of leading lights, and entered through a dredged channel, marked by leading lights.

Parnu Approach Leading Lights: Front light (white rectangle, black stripe on square metal framework tower, 15m in height) (58°22.7'N 024°28.0'E).

Rear light (similar daymark and structure, 20m in height) (820m from front light).

From a position on the recommended track, clear of Irmgardi madal, the alignment (024°) of these lights leads NNE for about 9nm to Parnu Lightbuoy (starboard hand), moored 0.8nm SW of the E breakwater, then:

Parnu Outer Leading Lights: Front light (white rectangle, red stripe on square framework tower 14m in height) (58°22.7'N 024°29.0'E). Rear light (similar daymark and structure, 24m in height) (365m from front light). The alignment (039°) of these lights leads NE for about 1.25nm, through a channel dredged to 5.0m and marked by buoys (lateral); then between the breakwater heads, from which lights are exhibited, then:

Parnu Inner Leading Lights: Front light (red rectangle, black stripe, on metal framework tower, 8.0m in height) (58°23.4'N 024°29.2'E). Rear light (similar daymark and structure, 14m in height) (220m from front light). The alignment (026.24°) of these lights leads from the outer leading line into the harbour.

Port limits

The port limits include the part of Parnu Jogi from its mouth to the town bridge, about 1.75nm upstream.

Anchorages

Outer anchorages: Excepting for winds from S and SW, which can send in a heavy sea, the bay is otherwise well sheltered. Large vessels may obtain anchorage anywhere in the middle of Parnu Laht, in depths of 5.5-8.7m, sand and mud, with good holding ground.

An anchorage area is established in the approach fairway at Parnu centred about 4.5nm SSW of the harbour entrance. The bottom in this area consists of sand and clay.

Tugs

Tugs are available.

If the diameter of the vessel's circular manoeuvre exceeds twice the length of the vessel, the vessel must use the aid of a tug.

Mooring

During mooring of vessels a representative of the quay operator must be present at the berth.

For mooring on Berths No 10-13, it is recommended to use the towing service.
