Approach
updated Feb 2012Approach
Approach: The port is approached through Teluk Parepare. From S steer for Tanjung Lero in line with the hill on the W side of the narrows, bearing 016°. From a position WNW of of Tanjung Bojo (04°05'S 119°36'E) the track leads NNE for approx 2nm until a position 0.3nm ESE of Tanjung Lero Light (red metal tower, 8.0m in height) is reached. The track passes between the fringing reefs at Tanjung Lero. The coastal reef on the side of the lighthouse is plainly marked by a discoloration. Then steer 015° until the E entrance point to Teluk Supa bears 029°, when it should be steered for. This course leads between the beacons marking Batu Laubang and Batu Tete to the anchorage.
The port is entered W of Batu Laubang (04°01'S 119°36'E), in Teluk Supra.
If proceeding into Teluk Supa, care must be taken to avoid the SE edge of Batu Tete. When the W entrance point to Teluk Supa bears 305°, the vessel will be past this reef, a dangerous wreck 0.15nm NE and a shoal with a depth of 6.7m over it, 0.2nm ENE of it, with deep water on either side of it. Then N into Teluk Supa and then to the oil berth.
Approach from N, a vessel will remain in deep water by keeping the alignment 160°of Pulau Baki, a low islet 0.4nm W of Tanjung Joncongang, with the bare rock summit of Alipang (04°19'S 119°40'E), a prominent hill. The W side of the coastal reef extending from Tanjung Lero is not marked by discoloration. When Batutollong (04°05'S 119°38'E) bears 090°, proceed NNE in to Teluk Parepare.
The channel has a length of 2.6nm, width of 926m and min depth of 18.0m. The port basin has min depth of 12.0m.
Speed: A vessel can proceed at moderate speed as far as Batu Laubang, but it is advisable to reduce speed when passing Pare Pare. In Teluk Supa a vessel should only have steerage way as there is not much room for manoeuvring and there are always numerous small craft in the area.
Port limits
Pare Pare is the area between the parallels of the beacon on Batu Laubang and the summit of Pulau Dapo, which lies on the W side of Teluk Supa, 1nm NW of the entrance to that bay.
