Tides

The max range of tide is about 2.0m. Current sets E to NE in general, except in the Harmattan season when it is westward. The speed of the current may reach 1kt. The area occasionally has strong tide rips that can cause sudden and unexpected swings of export tanker and FSO or CALM buoys in opposite directions.

Approach

Approach

There are no fairways, channels or buoys to aid approach to the terminal. Nearby oil platforms may be used to aid navigation.

Traffic schemes and VTS

None.

Anchorages

Safe anchorage is in a circle with radius 1.5nm centred on position 03°55.08'N 007°49.08'E.

Restrictions

Entry is restricted within an extensive area around the terminal and associated facilities.

The terminal is closed if weather conditions are such that berthing of incoming tankers is not possible and from 1600hrs LT until sunrise, but in special circumstances berthing can be allowed.

Export tankers must arrive with not less than 30% of its DWT and be able to load/deballast, maintaining not less than such DWT throughout.

Export tankers must arrive with trim of max 2m by the stern.

All operations are at the absolute discretion of the terminal superintendent.

Tugs

During the berthing and lifting period, a tug/supply vessel is secured to the stern of the lifting vessel. The towing wire is normally provided by the tug but lifting vessels should have a suitable mooring line ready. Second tug is made fast to starboard shoulder for berthing or after export tanker has been tied up and stays made fast throughout cargo operations. This tug uses its own towing wire.

"Seabulk Tem": Tug made fast to vessel's stern for berthing/loading operations.

"Santantonio Primo": Tug made fast to starboard shoulder for berthing/loading operations.

When about 1nm from FSO "Unity" and before commencing on final approach one tug will be made fast aft using tug's towing gear. Second tug will be made fast on starboard shoulder or main deck forward near lifting vessel's push point. The second tug may be made fast later, immediately after berthing operations if during this time it is assigned to other duties.

Mooring

Berthing is carried out under the guidance of the Mooring Master who remains onboard throughout the vessel's stay.

Procedure for berthing at Calm buoy:

Moored by two standard OCIMF chains, to the adjacent CALM buoy, where loading will be from conventional SBM floating hose.

The workboat will stand by in vicinity ready for immediate use.

Vessels loading at CALM buoy will be moored to the buoy by means of 2 nylon mooring hawsers 70m in length with MBL of 370t each. Each hawser is equipped with end chafe chain OCIMF recommended for type "A" tanker.

2 messenger lines should be prepared forward, both with shackles attached at their ends. One messenger on port and 1 on starboard side shoulder.

Port side hawser will be heaved in and secured in port stopper first. Starboard side hawser will be handled in the same manner afterwards.

Procedure for tandem berthing:

When lifting vessel is approximately 250m from the stern of FSO "Unity", workboat will approach to port side shoulder and messenger line will be lowered with 6t shackle attached to its end.

Vessels loading in tandem will be moored bow to stern of the FSO "Unity" by means of one nylon hawser, 100m in length with MBL of 663t. Both ends of the hawser are attached to OCIMF recommended chafe chains with release mechanism at FSO end and the other chafe chain will be made fast to the lifting vessel's bow stopper.
