Approach

Northport Bay is entered S of the narrow tongue extending 1nm from the SW corner of Eatons Neck; a narrow channel, dredged to a depth of 3.7m is marked by No 1 Lightbuoy (black Fl G 4s), moored 0.1nm W of the N entrance point, and then by buoys and a lightbuoy at the E end of the channel.

Anchorages

Vessels must anchor N or E of terminal away from power lines.

The port

The port consists of a small offshore platform used to service the Northport Power Station. The plant is the largest power generation facility on Long Island, however, in recent years the plants output capacity was reduced. At full capacity, the plant utilised heavy fuel from smaller tankers, tugs and barges calling at the platform to fuel the power station. The power station is now dual fuelled (heavy fuel and natural gas) and supplied to the plant via pipeline. As a result, smaller tankers are not necessary as the heavy fuel consumption may be met by tugs and barges only.
