Tides

Range 3.2-4.7m.

Tidal streams: The tidal streams in the River Barrow generally follow the line of the channel, but they sweep round each of the sharp bends at a considerable rate, continuing their direction from the previous reach. Great caution should be exercised when rounding these bends.

The tidal streams in the fairway of the river begin as follows:

Interval from HW

At New Ross, the streams begin 15 to 20 minutes later. The spring rates listed in the table above vary according to the position in the river. Actual max rates, in the entrance and at the principal bends, are given in their appropriate place in the description of the channel.

Tidal streams in the entrance: The ingoing stream sets from the River Suir, partly across the entrance of the River Barrow, in a direction approx 305° direct on to Drumdowney Point at a spring rate of approx 0.5kt.

Impinging against the W shore it is deflected into the line of the channel, setting in a direction approx 335°, through the opening in Barrow Bridge.

The outgoing stream attains a max spring rate of approx 2kts.

Approach

New Ross is approached by the common estuary of the rivers Suir and Barrow. The entrance which is 2.5nm in width, between Hook Head and Black Knob has depths of approx 15.0m and is free of dangers in the fairway. The outer bar, Duncannon Bar, 4nm N of Hook Head, has a least depth in the fairway of 6.0m LAT.

There are clear waters entering the estuary.

The governing depth for the river to New Ross is 2.2m CD.

The river is well buoyed and lighted for night navigation.

Port limits

The port limits extend from a line joining Drumdowney Point to Kilmokea Point adjacent to Barrow Railway Bridge (52°21.4'N 007°00.0'W).

Anchorages

Good anchorage is available in Dunmore Bay and N of Cheekpoint. Anchoring is permitted in the River Barrow only in accordance with instructions from the Harbour Master.

Restrictions

The max size of vessel that can navigate the River Barrow is restricted partly by the depths, partly by some sharp bends in the river, but also by the width of the openings at Barrow Bridge.

Navigation of the River Barrow for vessels of or near the max dimensions is restricted to daylight hours only according to Harbour Master's instructions.

Barrow Railway Bridge, which crosses the River Barrow just within its mouth, has at its W end a swing span providing two openings, each 24.3m in width.

Three overhead power cables, each with 36m headroom, span the river 1nm N of Barrow Bridge.
