Approach
updated May 2010Approach
New Haven Harbor is approached through the dredged entrance channel from the deep water of Long Island Sound.
In the approach to New Haven, Townsend Ledge, with a depth of 5.5m over it lies nearly 1.5nm SE of Morgan Point (41°15'N 072°54'W); No 10A Lightbuoy is moored on the S side of the ledge. New Haven Lightbuoy is moored on the line of approach, 2.5nm S of Morgan Point. A dangerous wreck lies in the approaches to New Haven 0.5nm NW of the pilot boarding station.
The entrance channel which leads between the E and middle breakwaters is entered between No 1 Lightbuoy and No 2 Buoy (red reflector), moored 0.75nm S of SW Ledge Lighthouse, where the channel is marked by lightbuoys, and by buoys, which are marked by red reflectors on the E side and white reflectors on the W side.
Port limits
The harbour comprises all the tidal waters lying N of the breakwaters constructed across the mouth of the bay and the navigable portions of West River, on the W side of the bay, and Mill River and Quinnipiac River, at the head of the bay.
Anchorages
Anchorage can be obtained in the outer harbour, inside W breakwater and the SW half of middle breakwater, which is suitable for vessels with up to 5.8m draught, generally soft bottom; caution is necessary to avoid fish stakes in the area. RS Buoy (white mooring; white reflector) is moored 0.5nm N of the E end of W breakwater. The approach to this anchorage is clear, either between the two breakwaters, in depths of 7m or between W breakwater and Oyster River Point in depths of approx 8.0m. Anchorage can also be obtained N of SW Ledge Lighthouse in depths of 5.5-6.1m, soft bottom in places; caution is needed to avoid the ledges N of the E breakwater.
Tugs
Tugs are available. Vessels normally proceed into the harbour without assistance. Large vessels normally require tugs for docking and undocking. Arrangements for tug service should be made 24 hours in advance usually through the ship's agent.
