Approach

updated Oct 2022

Approach

Non Russian vessels must use the charted fairway commencing in position 46°37.3'N 141°31.5'E, approx 14nm W of the port, on the alignment 079.2° of the leading lights. This alignment leads through the centre of the channel passing S of the breakwater and close N of Nevelsk South Lightbuoy (N cardinal) lying 200m SSE of the breakwater head.

Port limits

The port consists of an outer roadstead lying within an arc of 1.5nm radius centred on the S end of the main breakwater. The inner port, the fishing port harbour, lies shoreward of the main breakwater and a line between its S end and the N end of a small breakwater 0.25nm S.

Anchorages

Outer Anchorage: Anchorage can be obtained S of the leading line, 0.5nm SW of the S end of the N breakwater, in 20m sand, but without protection from W and N.

The following positions:

1. 46°40'22''N, 141°50'14''E.

2. 46°40'22''N, 141°49'07''E.

3. 46°40'02''N, 141°49'07''E.

4. 46°40'10''N, 141°50'14''E.

Anchorage farther E, where the bottom is flat stone, is not recommended.

Caution is noted due to W or SW winds will can lead to the anchorage becoming dangerous and vessels are advised to put to sea.

Restrictions

There is a depth of 5.6m on the leading line close inside the entrance; vessels of over 5.8m draught may not enter without the Harbour Master's permission. Vessels with a draught in excess of 6.5m are loaded and unloaded in the outer roadstead. The N part of the harbour has charted depths from 1.5-3.8m.

As of 2014, the N breakwater (46°40'N, 141°51'E) is believed to be damaged with numerous areas being submerged. The breakwater will be rebuilt however the time frame is unknown.

Between May and September, fishing nets extend 2 miles from W shore of Sakhalin Island to the S of parallel 48°. This will be marked by lighted buoys (with radar reflectors and red/orange flags). In the case of poor visibility approaching the shore is not recommended due to the risk of catching the net within the propellers and/or damaging the net itself.

There are an array of rocks, obstructions and stranded wrecks which lie in the harbour and at the end of Rif Naga.

Tugs

Available and mandatory for all vessels mooring greater than 50m LOA and 1000GT.

Mooring

Vessels mooring to the berths are given workers depending on their GT:

Under 300GT = 1 worker

301GT-1500GT = 2 workers

1501GT-2500GT = 3 workers

3501-5000GT = 4 workers

Exceeding 5000GT = 6 workers

Vessels re-mooring and re-berthing shall commence if winds do not exceed 15 metres per second.
