Approach

updated Jul 2025

Approach

Bocca Principale (Canale di Ponente), 2,250m long and 300m wide with a least depth of 34m, is the main entrance to Porto di Napoli and lies between the extremities of Diga Duca, Degli Abruzzi and Molo San Vincenzo to the SW and the extremity of Antemurale Thaon de Revel to the NE, and leads into Avamporto Ammiraglio Francesco Caracciolo which, with numerous basins, forms the W part of the harbour.

The E entrance (Canale di Levante), which lies between the head of the new mole 0.17nm SE of Molo del Progresso and the SE extremity of Diga Foranea Emanuele Filigerto Duca d'Aosta, is approached by a channel which is dredged to 15.0m, but silting does occur and mariners are advised to confirm depths with Harbour Master. The channel is entered 0.4nm SE of the SE extremity of Diga Foranea Emaanuele Filberto Duca d'Aosta and is marked by two pairs of light beacons; the depth of 15.0m is maintained through Avamporto di Levante as far as the W side of Molo di Progresso. Entry by the E entrance is difficult in SE winds.

Vessels bound for the W part of the harbour should enter and leave through Bocca Principale. Vessels of not more than 12.0m draught bound for the E part of the harbour may use either entrance; vessels of greater draught may use the E entrance, at reduced speed.

Traffic schemes and VTS

A traffic separation scheme has been established in the roads, for the approaches to Canale di Ponente. It comprises a separation zone, width 700m, bearing 350° for 1.5nm towards the entrance to the port, then turning 307° to the entrance. Entry and exit channels have been established either side of the separation zone.

A recommended route has been established in the roads, for the approaches to Canale di Levante. It comprises a two way route, within a channel width 1nm, and a bearing 180° from the entrance light beacons.

A channel between the S part of the roadstead and Bocca Levante has been established for vessels entering or leaving Porto di Napoli by the E entrance. The N part of the channel is marked by buoy light beacons (lateral).

The majority of vessels must enter or leave the port through the W channel and entrance. However vessels of less than 12.0m draught proceeding to the E part of the port are permitted to use either entrance. Vessels of draught greater than 12.0m must enter the port through Bocca di Levante.

All vessels loaded with or that have recently carried inflammable or combustible liquids, gas or liquefied gas, noxious or dangerous substances or products in liquid form, proceeding to Darsena Petroi, must enter or leave the port through the E channel and entrance. Container vessels greater than LOA 200m or draught greater than 10.0m proceeding to Molo Bausan are permitted to use the E entrance.

Vessels leaving harbour have the right of way.

Anchorages

Note: If no anchorage is available in Areas A or B, vessels will be directed to use Areas C.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited in Avamporto di Levante and anchoring and stopping are prohibited in an area 0.5nm in width and extending 0.75nm SSE from Avamporto di Levante.

A submarine outfall pipe is laid SSW from the shore 0.6nm E of the entrance; a diffuser at its seaward end is marked by a lightbuoy (special) moored 0.7nm SSE of the head of Diga Foranea.

Anchoring is prohibited in an area, 0.5nm wide and extending approx 0.75nm SSE from Bocca Principale.
