Pilots board from an orange motor launch with a blue hull, fitted with VHF, 0.8nm WSW, or, in bad weather, 0.5nm NE of Basilisk Beacon (09°32.5'S 147°07.6'E). Vessels should confirm ETA at least 4 to 5 hours before arrival.

Basilik Passage (09°33'S 147°07'E), the principal opening in the barrier reef leading to Port Moresby, has a shoal patch of 11.2m on the leading line with deep water to the E, and is the channel recommended to be used by large vessels proceeding to the port.

A restricted area exists, which extends 0.6nm N, 0.4nm S and 0.1nm E of the wharf.
