Approach
updated Jun 2020Approach
Main approach fairway: The main Uto-Naantali approach fairway has been dredged to 15.3m and leads from the Turku Fairway N of Rajakari Light structure, marked by leading lights and beacons.
From the Viheriainen leading line the fairway, marked by lightbuoys, leads approx 1nm NW to the oil harbour; a branch leads NE of a buoyed 4.1m shoal lying in the green and red sectors of Tupalahti Light, to No 1 Berth at Neste OY then turns W and SW to rejoin the main fairway W of the shoal. From this junction tracks for draughts of 5.7m and 10.0m lead to No 1 and No 2 Berths respectively, at Tupavuori; a channel, with a draught of 6.9m, leaves the main fairway at this point and leads to the shipyard on Luonnonmaa, 0.7nm W.
The main fairway to Naantali continues NW passing Kuivalahti Lightbuoy (Red Lateral) marking the NE side of 5.0m shoal, 0.75nm further NW. The draught then decreases to 7.3m and finally 2.4m within 0.25nm of the bridge.
West approach channel: The W approach channel, authorised for a draught of 5.5m, is marked by beacons and buoys. From Airisto Ersten, approx 0.75nm S of Iso Tervi, the fairway leads NNW to Luonnonmaa (60°27.0'N 022°00.0'E), then along the SW, W and NE sides of that island to the W side of Naantali.
From Kailo, an islet approx 0.75nm NW of the bridge at Naantali, the fairway through to the harbour on the E side is authorised for a draught of 2.4m; submarine cable and water pipelines cross this section of the fairway. A bridge connects Kailo with Naantali.
A branch channel, dredged to a depth of 2.6m, marked by three buoys (spars, N cardinal), leads WNW from the 5.5m channel under the SW arm of the bridge to a fishing harbour at Sarkansalmen.
A buoyed branch channel, authorised for a draught of 4.0m, leads E for 2.5nm between Luonnonmaa and Lapila (60°24.5'N 022°03'E) to the Naantali Main Approach Fairway, from a position 0.5nm SSE of the beacon 60°25.2'N 021°59.5'E, situated on the SW coast of Luonnonmaa. A submarine cable runs along the entire length of this channel.
A branch channel, with a draught of 2.4m, leads NNE through Santalanlahti 60°25.0'N 022°06.0'E to a small craft harbour on the W side of Ruissalo.
Santalanlahti Leading Lights, in line bearing 015°, and then Hotelli Leading Lights, at the head of the inlet, in line bearing 025°, indicate the channel.
