About Mykolayiv

updated May 2022

Where it is

The commercial sea port of Mykolayiv (also known as Mykolaiv or Nikolaev) is located at the mouth of the Yuzhny Bug River (the Southern Bug), in the northern part of the Dnieper, the Bug estuary.

The port

The port handles ferrous and non-ferrous metals, bulk fertiliser, equipment, bulk grain, coal and foodstuffs.

The port is open for navigation all year round, but in winter traffic through the approach channel is permitted only in convoys escorted by ice breakers. Ice begins to form in the second half of December and finally disappears in the channel and estuary in the first half of March.

The small port of Ochakov, also included in the Mykolayiv Port area, is 53km to the SW, and, with its military area, is in the strategic position of guarding the entrance to the Yuzhny Bug River

Traffic

Approx 30,000,000t of cargo (including 13,600,000t of grain) handled annually.
