Approach

updated Apr 2022

Approach

Approach and entry: From a position approx 4.5nm SSE of Ra's Burum 14°20.0'N 049°00.0'E, the approach to Al Mukalla Harbour leads approx 5nm N to a position 1nm W of Ra's Marbat 14°30.5'N 049°09.6'E. The harbour entrance, between breakwaters to the S and N, has a width of 105m and depth 10.0m below CD. A turning area has a diameter of 240m and depth of approx 8.5m.

Directions for berthing at Al Mukalla Oil Terminal: Approach the berth, on a course of 117° with Ra's Marbat 14°30.5'N 049°09.6'E, just open on the port bow. Both anchors are used and dropped on the alignment of a common rear beacon, standing near the shore approx 0.6nm NW of Ra's Marbat, and two separate and individual front beacons. The depth of water in the anchorage positions is approx 37m.

Port limits

The port limits are on a line 2.5nm due W of Ras Marbet, then due N to the coast.

Anchorages

There are three anchorage positions available. The recommended position lies in a depth of approx 31m, approx 0.4nm SSW of the unnamed rocky projection on which stands the town of Al Mukalla.

Smaller vessels may anchor farther NW, noting the two stranded wrecks which lie on the shoal area W of the rocky projection and the prohibited area, which lies farther W.

The anchorage is exposed to the SW monsoon and for this reason may be closed from May to Oct.

A prohibited anchorage is established within 350m of a submarine pipeline laid 0.6nm SSW from the shore on the S side of town.

Restrictions

Cargo may be handled all year and worked throughout 24 hours if required, inside Khalf Harbour.

Berthing is normally carried out during daylight hours, during darkness in special cases.

Cargo should be distributed equally in all hatches and all cargo discharging operations to be carried out direct delivery basis.

Tugs

Two tugs are available.

Mooring

Caution: Jelly fish may choke engine room seawater intakes at the beginning of the NE monsoon season.
