Approach

updated Jul 2014

Approach

The entrance to Mawlamyine River is lined with drying sandbanks and reefs. The river is usually navigable as far as the town of Moulmein by vessels with draught varying from 3.7-4.9m at HWN and 5.8-7.3m HWS.

Anchorages

There are anchorages at several places in Mawlamyine River but vessels must moor. Anchorage can be obtained by two vessels not exceeding 137m in length in a depth of approx 6.4m.

Moulmein anchorage lies abreast the town of Moulmein, approx 2nm N of Mupon Pagoda (16°26.2N 097°37.1'E). There is also an anchorage berth for vessels up to 1,000t.

Anchorage may also be obtained abreast the N part of Moulmein town where there are three berths for vessels with draughts of 6.1m to 7.6m.

Mupon anchorage lies off Mupon Pagoda in depths of approx 12.0m.

Deep draught vessels may moor off Natmhaw, 1nm SSW off the S end of Yele Kyun.

Restrictions

The winding approach channel from the S end of Bilugyun Island forms a limiting factor for vessels using the port. Draughts vary according to changes in river bars and state of tides. Entrance into the river at night is not permitted.

Tugs

There is 1 x 550hp tug available.
