Approach

updated Jun 2017

Approach

SBM buoy: Has a radar reflector. At night it shows a light flashing, the morse code letter 'U', every 15sec (5nm visibility).

A fog horn is installed, in case of poor visibility, it sounds the 'U' signal every 30sec, (audible for 2nm).

Anchorages

Standby anchorage area: A circle, radius 1nm is located within a centre located at: 04°07.6'N 008°31.1'E.

Approach to the standby anchorage area is from the E, in a sector between the bearing 210°-330° to the buoy from the ship.

Restrictions

Mooring at the loading buoy is carried out in daylight only, between 0600-1800hrs, however sailing may take place at night.

Tugs

There is 1 small tug available.

Mooring

Terminal Mooring Team: A team of 4 to 6 deck hands under the responsibility of the Loading Master may be provided by the terminal to give assistance to the ship's crew, but without substituting them. Winches and windlasses are operated exclusively by the ship's crew.

Approach to the buoy: While the ship is approaching the buoy, a workboat provided by the terminal is used to keep the floating hoses away from the ships course.

Meanwhile the Loading Master stays on the fo'csle and provides the pilot and the Master with the required information on the manoeuvre.

Securing the mooring rope: The mooring team at the fo'csle sets out a messenger line, (diameter 30mm, length 200m) passing through a centre fairlead, the end of which is sent to the terminal Zodiac boat.

When the tanker is at a convenient distance from the buoy the Zodiac crew connects this messenger rope to the end of the polypropylene hawser, (heaving line, diameter 80mm, length 180m) attached to the mooring rope of the buoy.

The messenger rope and the heaving line are hauled using a tanker winch or windlass, until a convenient length of chain, placed between the heaving line and the mooring rope of the buoy is on deck.

This chain is then made fast, using the tanker's chain stopper (if fitted) or a strong nylon snotter rope provided by the Terminal.

Pulling off: The Terminal workboat keeps the vessel away from the buoy once the vessel is moored. As the mooring rope of the buoy is fastened, the work boat proceeds to the stern of the vessel. To secure the end of the tanker, a strong hawser is then secured onto her towing winch. Using this towing rope, the workboat shall apply a moderate but permanent pull for the duration of loading of the tanker to avoid her bow coming in contact with the buoy, should a change of current or wind arise.
