Approach
updated Jan 2021Approach
Two approach channels, one N of Holmengra and then entered through Fensfjorden, the other S of Fedje, with deep water up to 38m depth, give good access to Mongstad.
An approach channel extends from a position 2.5nm WNW of Holmengra, passing N of Grimeskjaer, then ESE through Fjensfjord to the jetties. The channel is 0.5nm wide W of Grimeskjaer and 0.35nm wide E of that rock.
Anchorages
There is no anchorage for VLCC's which should drift west of Holmengroe Lighthouse.
Anchorage for Mongstad is available in Fonnesflaket, W of Havarden. Further particulars may be obtained from the pilot and Fedje VTS centre permission should be requested beforehand.
Tugs
Ships that do not comply must use additional tug assistance during their calls at Mongstad Terminal.
Mooring
Mooring arrangements: With the exception of Jetties No 3, 4 and 10 the jetties are equipped with quick release hooks mooring units which can be operated from the jetty office. Jetties No 1 and 7 have berthing aid systems to monitor vessel's approach velocity and distance from the jetty.
Jetty 14: All wires must have tails. Mooring boat will pick up the spring lines. The wind limit for accepting a ULCC alongside is 23.3kts. There should be no mix of ropes and wires to the same mooring point. Mooring: Ships must be securely moored and maintained in position at all times. The Master is responsible for ensuring mooring lines are tendered and vessel movement is minimised. For vessels above 50,000DWT a min of 10 mooring lines must be permanently installed on mooring winches.
Self tensioning winches must be secured with winches in the locked position at all times. Use of self tensioning winches in automatic mode is strictly forbidden. Wires and ropes not permanently installed on mooring winches shall be secured on bitts. Vessels must, in addition to the normal number of mooring lines, have two extra lines spare both forward and aft.
All mooring wires must have rope tails and wires and ropes must not be mixed in the same direction.
While secured alongside, towing wires with sufficient length and strength must be provided on the seaward bow and quarter. The eyes of the towing wires must be maintained just above the water ready for emergency towing.
