Approach

From the vicinity of 36°48.0'N 024°20.0'E the fairway leads SE passing (with positions given from Nisidhes Akradia Light (36°47.0'N 024°24.0'E)).

SE of Nisidhes Akradia, two rocky islets lying 0.1nm apart. Nisidhes Akradia Light (square tower and dwelling, 7.0m in height) is exhibited from the NW side of the W islet. A bank with a depth over it of 25.0m lies about 0.6nm NNW of the light. Then:

NE of Akra Vani (2.5nm SW), the SW entrance point of the bay; then:

SW of Akra Lakida (1nm ESE), the NE entrance point of the bay; then:

SW of Vrachos Monopetro (1.24nm SE), a remarkable bold rock 5.0m in height; then:

SE of Akra Fourkovouni (1.75nm SSE), a promontory fronted by rocks lying up to 0.1nm offshore, the NE entrance point of the inner part of the bay; then:

NE of Akra Kalamaria (2.5nm S), a prominent projection forming the SW entrance point of the inner part of the bay. A wreck with a depth over it of 21.5m lies 0.4nm NW of point; then:

SW of Akra Bomparda (36°43.0'N 024°26.0'E), a light coloured bluff headland. Akra Bomparda Light (white house, 4.0m in height) is exhibited from the headland and is clearly visible from all directions.

Port limits

Port limits are from position 36°43.5'N 024°26.7'E.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained as convenient in depths from 18.0-45m, mud; the further offshore, the better the holding ground.

It is usual to anchor near the head of the bay, E of a line drawn 180° from Akra Bombardha Light. Depths decrease rapidly, and if the anchor is in a depth of 37m the vessel's stern, when swung inshore and lying to a good scope of cable, will be in a depth of approx 22m. The bottom is soft mud and the holding is good.

During S to SW winds vessels should anchor near the S shore of the bay where the bottom is sand.

Anchor berths: Off Adamas: Recommended berths are as follows:

In a depth of approx 46m with the church bearing 338° distant 0.7nm, on the alignment 296° of Akra Bombardha, Akra Kalamaria and the summit of Nisis Andimilos.

In a depth of 27.0m with the church bearing 324° distant 0.5nm.

In a depth of 15.0m with the church bearing 327° distant 0.275nm.

Off Mikobar Jetty: In a depth of approx 25m with the head of the jetty bearing 037° distant 0.45nm.

Ormos Rivari: 36°42.7'N 024°24.3'E. In a depth of 20.0m, mud, good holding, with the prominent chapel bearing 130° distant 0.35nm. Further offshore the depths increase rapidly.

Restrictions

Dangers to be avoided: Positioned from Akra Bomparda Light:

Foul area (submerged obstruction) etending 0.45nm ENE.

Patch with a depth over it of 6.8m (075°, 0.35nm).

Patch with a depth over it of 9.9m (098°, 0.25nm).

Foul area (105°, 1.1nm).

Wreck with a depth over it of 21.0m (117°, 1.3nm).

Foul patch (120°, 0.9nm).

Submarine pipeline, extending 180m offshore from a power station, marked at its seaward end by a buoy (special) (120°, 1.75nm).

Wreck with a depth over it of 30m (118°, 0.45nm).

Tugs

Vichos tugs available.

Mooring

Voudhia Bay: It is usual to approach the berth on a NW heading, let go the starboard anchor and secure port side to berthing dolphins with lines to four offshore lit mooring buoys and to three mooring posts on the shore.

When in position, vessels lie about 2.0m off the dolphins. The line of the berth is 055°/235°. A shoal with a depth over it of 1.2m lies about 0.35nm E of the berth.
