Middelburg is approached through the Kanaal door Walcheren. The canal is approx 6nm long and entered through the lock at Vlissingen. The lock at the inner harbour of Vlissingen is 35m wide and depths of 4.8m on the sill. Two further locks are located at the Veere with the larger one being 135m long, 19.3m wide and depths of 7.2m on the sill. The canal has a maintained depth of 6.3m.
There is a swinging area for vessels up to 50m in length, longer vessels must proceed stern first to their berth in the basin.
