updated Sep 2020

Approach

The harbour is entered between the breakwater heads at its NE corner, a light is exhibited at each breakwater head.

The W breakwater, which curves NE at its outer end has the main wharf situated on its inner side.

The E breakwater has the ferry berths, situated near its inner end.

Due to continual silting, dredging is carried out periodically to maintain charted depths; mariners are cautioned that depths less than those charted must be expected.

Port limits

From a position approx 0.1nm SW of the root of the W breakwater, the port limit extends 0.9nm NW, then continues NE to a position 48°52.3'N 67°31.7'W and then S to the coast.

Restrictions

The channel depth is 8.5m at extreme low tide. Although the harbour is open all year round, occasionally the assistance of an icebreaker is required.

A cathodic protection system is in operation in the port and appropriate precautionary measures should be taken.

There are two submarine pipelines 0.3nm NE and SW of the harbour extending 55m and 300m, respectively, out to sea.
