Approach
updated Nov 2020Approach
For the latest controlling depths, vessels should consult the local harbour and pilotage authorities.
Mariupol harbour is approached by a buoyed channel that has been dredged through the coastal bank.
A vessel is regarded as arrived at Mariupol after dropping anchor at the outer roads anchorage or passed Buoys No 1 and 2 (46°53.1'N 037°27.1'E).
Buoys No 1 and 2 are situated at the entrance to the Mariupol Approach Channel. The channel is 9.4nm in length, 100m in width and has an average depth of 8.6m. This leads to the Coal Harbour and further on to the port piers and to the Azov Ship Repairing Yard.
Least depths of dredged approach channels is 8.2m for Vuhilna Harbour and 3.7m for the port of Azovstal.
Azovstal: If open, only vessels maximum 4.5m. draught and up to 200m length are allowed into the port area. Larger vessels may be allowed, following consultation with the Harbour Master. A buoyed channel, approximately 3.0nm long, leads NE from Muriupol (course 044°).
Port limits
The port complex consists of the outer roads (anchorages), inner roads (forming the Grain Harbour, Coal Harbour and Western Harbour) and approach channel. The inner road is bounded by the East Pier, North Mole, South Mole, Eastern Mole, Dike Dam and West Mole.
Traffic schemes and VTS
Further information will always be given, on request.
Anchorages
The area, enclosed by the outer edges of the Southern and Eastern moles together with the line connecting the breakwater and the Southern Mole extremity, is used for temporary anchorage of small vessels.
Azovstal Port: When waiting for entering the port, vessels may stay in the outer road at Anchorage 458 (see above) or an area to the East of Mariupol Port assigned to vessels with a maximum draught of 3.5m.
Restrictions
Vessels can enter and leave the port at any time, day or night.
The max speed in the approach channel is 8kts and in the part protected by a wooden dam the max speed is 3kts. The speed of a vessel may be increased in case of necessity in order to keep the vessel on course along the leading line or to prevent drifting out of the channel due to current and wind effects.
Traffic: Two way traffic in the approach channel is permitted, except with wind speeds above 28kts, visibility less than 2nm. The VTS will then declare one way traffic only for passing tankers and vessels over 150m. One way navigation may be introduced in the Mariupol approach channel in instances of strong winds or vessels having a draught greater than 5.0m.
Ice: Ice breaker assistance is necessary during the winter months.
All vessels entering or leaving the port should have an under keel clearance of not less than 0.2m.
Vessels with a draught of 7.5m or more, proceeding in the approach channel are considered to be restricted by draught and shall exhibit the signals as specified by Rule 28 of IRPCS-72.
Tugs
Tugs are available and compulsory when berthing. Vessels of 1,500GT or greater must employ 2 tugs. Tugs should be ordered 40mins before entering the port and 30mins prior to unmooring or shifting. Such orders should be submitted to the Mariupol port's Operator.
Azovstal: Tugs should be ordered no later than 40 minutes before entering the port and 30 minutes before sailing.
Mooring
The quay to which a vessel is to berth must be 30m longer than the vessel's LOA. Berthing and unberthing is not permitted if the wind speed exceeds 27kts.
General berthing information: During a stay in the outer roads a vessel should monitor VHF Ch 16 or 14. The Master is informed of berthing at least one hour prior to the embarkation of the pilot.
