Approach

updated Feb 2018

Approach

Mariehamn main approach channel:

The main buoyed channel from seaward, authorised for a draught of 8.2m into the harbours, may be approached from the S passing close E of Kobbarklintar island group (60°01.7'N 019°53.4'E), or from the SW, passing either N or S of Marhallan (below) then NW of Kobbarklintar; a fog signal is sounded on the N side of Kobbarklilntar.

Marhallan Light (60°01.9'N 019°52.5'E), is exhibited from a red round concrete tower, with a black band, elevation 14m, floodlit at night, on an islet 0.3nm W of the NW-most islet of the Kobbarklintar group. A Racon transmits and a fog signal is sounded from the light structure; a radio beacon on Korso, 0.9nm NE, is synchronised with the fog signal.

Mellangadden Beacon, a disused light tower (white concrete), stands on the islet of that name 0.7nm NW of Marhallan; 0.5nm further NW, Kakan Beacon (white cairn) stands at an elevation of 9m, on the small islet of that name.

Korso Leading Lights, similar daymarks (red rectangles, yellow stripe) on the SW side of Korso, consist of two rear lights and a common front light (60°02.4'N 019°54.0'E); the N-most rear light, 0.05nm NE, is in line 052° and leads close SE of Mariehamn, between that islet and Marbada, an islet 0.3nm S on which stands a beacon (red radar reflector on post). The other rear light, 0.1nm ENE, is in line 066° and leads NW of Marhallan passing S of Sodergadden an islet 0.3nm N. A Racon transmits from the front light structure.

Tvibenan Light (60°02.4'N 019°53.3'E) (elevation 5m; white lantern and base) stands on the S end of the islet of that name on the W side of the channel, approx 0.5nm W of Korso.

Directions: Vessels approaching from S, steer 006° with Korso Front Light structure ahead within the white sector of that light bearing between 003° and 009°, passing E of Kvasten, a rock with a depth of 0.9m over it marked by a buoy (spar) approx 0.5nm SE of Marbada. When E of Kobbarklintar, steer for Tvibenan Light structure bearing approx 335° for approx 0.65nm, to a position on the Lotsberget Leading Line, joining with the SW approach channels.

Lotsberget Leading Lights (red rectangles, yellow stripe, on metal framework towers, 15m and 10m in height) (60°05.0'N 019°56.2'E), 0.25nm apart, stand 0.5nm S of the town of Mariehamn; in line bearing 027.5° they lead between the buoys and beacons marking the shoals and islets either side of the channel, to within approx 1.25nm S of the front light structure, where it is joined by the W approach channel. The channel which continues on this alignment is then only authorised for a draught of 6.1m; the 8.2m track branches NE for 0.5nm and joins the Mariehamn Leading Line 0.75nm N of Grano Light.

Korso Lightbuoy (W cardinal) is moored on the E side of the fairway 0.2nm SW of Korso.

Korrviksten Lightbuoy (W cardinal) moored approx 0.5nm SSW of Lotsberget Front Light, marks the junctions of the 6.1m fairway with the Mariehamn Leading Line.

Hetronklubb Beacon (60°02.8'N 019°54.0'E) (red iron pole on round concrete base, 8.5m in height; radar reflector), stands on the E side of the channel close SW of the islet of that name, 0.5nm N of Korso Front Light structure.

Bockenshallarna Beacon (two hexagonal radar reflectors on metal pole), stands on the W side of the channel, at an elevation of 6m, on the S end of one of a group of rocks, 0.3nm NNW of Hetronklubb.

Vitfagelskar Beacon (60°03.6'N 019°54.4'E), a cairn, on that islet on the W side of the channel; Granoklubb Beacon (two hexagonal radar reflectors on metal pole), elevation 7m, stands on the E side of the channel 0.5nm ENE, at the N end of a small islet.

Leading Lights: Mariehamn Leading Lights (metal structures, 5m and 12m in height) the front near Mariehamn Pilot Station (60°05.4'N 019°56'E) and the rear close N, are in line bearing 004°. They lead N from the Stegskarsgrund/Stegskar Leading Line to the S part of West Harbour.

Mockelo Leading Lights (60°06.5'N 019°55.3'E) (red triangles, points together, yellow stripe) in line bearing 351.5°, lead through the N part of West Harbour.
