Approach

updated Oct 2024

Approach

The harbour is approached from SSE and entered via a buoyed channel. The approach outer channel, width 250m, dredged to permit vessels with 15m draught entry to the Eastern Reclamation Area and the fairway to the inner basin within the harbour is dredged to 12.5m. The approach inner channel and swinging basin has a depth of 10.0m below CD. The distance from the fairway buoy to the harbours Western breakwater is 2nm.

Anchorages

Anchorage area exists, covering a circular area with 1nm radius around 12°35.0'N., 101°13.5'E for vessels which arrival draught exceeds 10.0m.

On arrival the vessel will be given berthing or anchoring instructions on VHF Ch 19 or 67 by the Marine Terminal.

Vessels at anchor should maintain a listening watch on Ch 16, 19 and 67. Vessels will be called by the operator with berthing information and other instructions.

SPM TERMINAL: On approaching the terminal, VHF contact can be established on VHF Ch 16 and the vessel will be advised of berthing procedure. In cases where VHF contact is not made, the vessel should proceed to the designated anchorage.

Vessels should not approach closer to the SPM than 2nm without a Mooring Master onboard.

Restrictions

Map Ta Phut Tanker Terminal: The minimum under keel clearance required by the pilot office is 0.5m. MTT requirements for under keel clearance vary between 0.5m for vessels up to 6,000DWT and 1.0m for larger vessels.

As a safety operating procedure, when the terminal wind indicator records winds blowing at 34kts from any direction, the terminal will inform ship's personnel to be alert with regard to mooring lines, and stop unloading/loading operation, drain and disconnect loading arms and move back to the safe stowed position.

The above actions are taken to ensure that disconnecting operations have been completed prior to winds increasing to the 40kts level which is the maximum operating wind for the loading arms.

Ship Manifold requirements: No flexible hoses are allowed for connection with loading arms on the vessel. The jetty is equipped with loading arms of various types; they should therefore be used in accordance with their operating limits.

Tugs

The harbour has 3 tugs available. Tugs are required to assist in berthing and unberthing.

Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal: The use of tugs is compulsory in the terminal for both berthing and unberthing. Vessels up to LOA 150/213m requires 2/3 tugs respectively. Tug lines used for towing. Tug services are arranged for by the ship's agent and in monsoon season at least one tug must standby in the vicinity nearby, whilst vessels are alongside.

Mooring

Mooring arrangements for Map Ta Phut Tanker Terminal: Mooring gangs and mooring boats are arranged by the ship's agent. Vessels berth starboard side alongside, heading W towards the port entrance. Vessels up to 10,000DWT 4 breast lines and 2 springs fore and 2 springs aft, vessels greater 6 breast lines and 2 springs fore and 2 springs aft. Minimum mooring wire/rope breaking strength shall be 75t.
