Approach

updated Jul 2017

Approach

The main route into Mandal from seaward is through Mannefjorden, (58°00'N 007°28'E), from within which routes can be chosen:

To approach mandal itself by passing close E of Hattholmen (58°00'N 007°28'E), then N towards the harbour; with entry through a dredged channel.

For the deep water approach to the fuelling berth and deep water commercial port by passing between Faeroy (57°59.7'N 007°29.4'E) and Stusoy, 0.3nm N; then N in the fairway between Stosoy and the mainland and finally NE between Gismeroya and the mainland, direct into the port area.

The SW and SSE approaches are suitable for small vessels with local knowledge only.

At night, vessels should enter the fjord in the white sector of Hattholmen Light, bearing between 335°-356° which leads NNW for about 5.0nm. When Hattholmen Light is distant 0.5nm, vessels should keep in the sector of Sjosanden Light, bearing between 352°-355°, which leads N for about 1.5nm passing between Hattholmbaen (marked by a spar buoy (isolated danger)) and Gulholmen. Then E of Ostre Hattholmen and W of Bjorneskjaer (black with diagonal white stripe, height 2.0m) and Buskebaen (spar buoy (isolated danger). From this sector Nedre Malmoy Leading Lights (58°01'N 007°28'E) are in alignment, bearing 043°, leading NE through the dredged channel into the mouth of Mandalselva.

The fairway to the quays is marked with buoys (spar). A light is exhibited from the head of Pirhola jetty, on the NW entrance point of Mandalselva 0.22nm E of Sjosanden Light structure.

Kastelpynten Light is exhibited from a position on the W bank of the river 0.15nm N of Pirhola jetty. Mollebakken Light is exhibited on the W bank of the river 0.17nm NW of Kastelpynton. These lights in line, bearing 313°, indicate the turning point up the river from the Nedre Malmoy leading line.

Deep water approach to the deep water commercial port: From Mannefjorden an approach to the berths at Kleven and Gismeroya leads ENE in deep water for about 1.5nm. When clear of Kalkskjaer, a small islet on which stands Kalkskaer Light post and a beacon (black truncated cone, white band, height 2.0m), the track leads N for about 0.4nm through the channel between Stusoy and the mainland. Then into the port of the alignment (324°) of Kleven Leading Lights (posts) (58°01.4'N 007°28.6'E), which stands at the head of Kleven Harbour.

Anchorages

Anchorage is available in Mannefjordan, 58°00.5'N 007°27.5'E in a depth of 25m. Small vessels anchor at Bankefjorden, 58°00.7'N 007°26.0'E in a depth of 12m.

Kleven (58°01.3'N 007°28.9'E) in depths of 31m, clay, with land ties to mooring rings.

Restrictions

Speed: Within the harbour district, speed shall not exceed 7kts. Under no circumstances must the speed be great enough to create wash which may cause damage or danger to other vessels or the harbour installations.

Speed limits: 5kts inside Mandalselva and 7kts inside a line drawn from the river mouth 0.6nm SW to Aspholmen, then 0.4nm W across Bankefjorden to Hobdeodden (58°00.7'N 007°25.6'E)

A bridge which crosses Mandalselva approx 0.6nm above the entrance, has a vertical clearance of 3.5m.

The bridge connecting Gismeroya with Kleven has a vertical clearance of 4.7m. Landing and unauthorised approach within 50m are prohibited around the military restricted area of Homsvika (58°00.4'N 007°30.0'E).
