Approach

updated Sep 2026

Approach

Approach and entry: The main harbour is entered through a channel, approximately 0.5nm in length, leading SE from Flintrannan. There is a separate channel, approx 3nm in length, for entry to Oljehamnen and Swede Harbour, 1.5nm NE. Each channel is marked by leading lights, channel limit lights, buoys and lightbuoys (lateral).

Channel to main harbour: The alignment (142.5°) of the leading lights heads SE from a position approx 0.3nm NE of Malmo Redd Lightbuoy (safe water) (55°38.5'N 012°57.0'E) for approx 1.75nm into a dredged channel, approx 200m in width. The limits of the channel are marked at its seaward end by Malmo NW Lightbuoy (starboard hand) and by Roderprick Lightbuoy (port hand).

Channel limit lights: The leading lights in line (142.5°) mark the NE edge of the channel.

The leading lights in line (143.5°) mark the SW edge of the channel.

Buoys and a pair of lightbuoys (lateral) also mark the limits of the channel.

Approach from S: From Jun-Nov inclusive, vessels approaching either Malmo or Limhamn from S should keep to the channel through Flintrannan until abeam Malmo Redd Lightbuoy (safe water), on account of the herring fishery with drift nets.

Frihamnen Leading Lights: From a position approximately 0.3nm NW of Central hamnsrannan front leading light, the alignment (117°) of these lights leads ESE for approx 0.4nm passing through the entrance to Frihamnen, 115m in width marked by Malmo No 5 and No 6 Lights (white pedestals, floodlit).

Industrihamnen Leading Lights: The alignment (082.5°) of these lights leads E for approx 1nm from a position 0.1nm N of Malmo No 3 Light (white framework tower, floodlit) (55°37.3'N 012°59.1'E), at the head of the W breakwater, through a dredged channel, 100m in width, into Industrihamnen.

The channel is marked by buoys and lightbuoys (lateral), moored at the edge of the reclaimed land on either side, which is also marked at its W end on the S side channel by No 2 Lightbuoy (W cardinal).

From a position approx 0.2nm W of the front light, the track leads ESE in the white sector (103-108°) of a light (white metal framework tower, red bands, 50m in height) (55°37'N 013°01.8'E), on the S side of Industrihamnen No 2 basin. This final leg of the channel, least width 80m, passes between the heads of 2 short moles, marked by Malmo No 10 and No 11 Lights (lanterns on white pedestals).

Anchorages

Outer anchorage is available in Malmo Redd, 1nm N of Vagbrytarbank Light (55°37.5'N 012°58.6'E) in depths of 12.0-14.0m, stiff blue clay, as shown on the chart. A wreck with a depth of 10.8m over it is marked by a W cardinal buoy which lies 0.25nm E of the anchorage. Care must be taken to avoid anchoring on the leading line into the harbour.

Anchorage may also be found in Lunddakrabukten and Lommabukten close to the pilot boarding station. However, the holding ground in these areas is poor.

Prohibited anchorages: Anchoring is forbidden within the port area and in the entry channels to the port apart from those cases when anchoring is necessary for the safe navigation of a vessel. It is forbidden to anchor within the entry channel to the Oil Harbour.

Restrictions

Vessels bound for Wharf Basin to pass a bridge to be opened as per agreement with port operator Malmo Port. Requests should be made on VHF Ch 14, 1 hour in advance during office hours.

The Port Authority may issue instructions on warping or movements of vessels if this is necessitated by traffic or for other reasons.
