Tides

Range 1.5m springs. Tidal streams in Makassar have only a slight influence on the monsoon current. From four days observations towards the end of Mar, during the NW monsoon, it was found that on the average, the N going stream ran from 4.5 hours before HW and the S going stream from 25 minutes to 5 hours before the next following HW. The duration of the N going stream against the S current is only just over half that of the S going stream at this period of the year. The rate of the S going stream was 1-1.5kts whilst that of the N going stream was very weak.

Current: The S current in the open part of Selat Makassar seldom exceeds a rate of 1kt. When Jene Berang is in flood, owing to heavy rains and sometimes with strong winds from a direction S of W, there is a N going current in the roadstead, whilst outside the reefs the current is setting S.

Approach

updated Aug 2023

Approach

The S approach channel leads N to the port, a wide channel leading N of Pulau Dayang-dayangan and Selat Tanakeke to the roadstead. A shoal patch with a least depth of 17.2m lies 4nm ENE of Pulau Dayang-dayangan.

The N approach channel consists of three passages generally leading S to the port from a position NW of Pulau Panikiang. The central passage, which is well marked and lit, has a least depth of 17.5m in the fairway. The outer passage is not recommended for Makassar. The inner passage gives access to Birigkasi Cement Works from N or S but is not lit. For all three passages local knowledge is required.

From the pilot boarding position using the lighted channel between Gosong Boni and the fringed reef, containing the N breakwater, 1nm S.

Port limits

Makassar lies between the port of Makassar and a line of reefs and shoals 0.5nm offshore. It comprises the area S of the parallel of 05°06'S, bounded by a line drawn from Mariso Lighthouse (05°09'S 119°09'E) to the disused light structure on the S part of Pulau Lae-Lae Kecil (Groot Lae Lae) 1.5nm NW of Mariso Lighthouse, the parallel of 05°08'S, the meridian 119°22'E, the parallel of 05°07'S and a line drawn in an 017° direction from a position in 05°07'S 119°24'E.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained in the outer anchorage W of the breakwaters in depths of 20.0-23.0m. The embarking or disembarking of passengers or loading and unloading of cargo is prohibited in this anchorage.

With local approval, vessels may obtain anchorage in depths of 16.0m or less within the breakwaters.

Tugs

There are 4 tugs available.

Mooring

With strong winds from seaward there is sometimes a considerable sea against the wharves, especially Pangkalan Sukarno, which is only slightly protected by the breakwater. Large vessels and those with high superstructures are advised to let go anchor at some distance from the wharves when proceeding to their berths, so as to assist in holding off the fore part of the vessel. There are several mooring and warping buoys off the wharves. During the NW monsoon, vessels are required to berth 6.0m off the wharves by means of the warping buoys, 15 to 20 buoys are available.
