Approach
updated Feb 2020Approach
Calalin channel: The main entrance to the lagoon is entered between Eroj Island and Calalin Island, 2.5nm E, width approx 2nm.
A shoal area with a least depth of 0.9m and of considerable extent lies in the middle of the entrance and divides the entrance into W and E channels.
The W channel, lying along the reef extending SE from Eroj Island, has a width of approx 0.2nm, swept to a depth of 14.9m.
The E channel, swept to a depth of 8.8m is only suitable for small vessels. The fairway is considerably reduced in width by shoals, local knowledge is therefore required.
Anchorages
Anchorage may be obtained in the E half of the lagoon where the bottom is mainly soft rock. The W half of the lagoon is studded with coral heads and anchorage can only be obtained with local knowledge.
Djarrit anchorage, situated in the NE corner of the lagoon is sheltered from NE winds, with depths from 27-47m, sand and coral or soft rock.
Restrictions
Entry, pilotage, berthing and unberthing during daylight hours only.
When a tanker is berthed, no other vessel is permitted in its immediate vicinity.
Tugs
Salvage tugs are available.
Mooring
Uliga Island Pier: Berthing port side alongside is recommended owing to shoals extending beyond the line of the pier.
